And in the blue corner, fighting out of Amsterdam, with a TWGC record of 2 wins and 1 losses; Philip Roth! The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, Bruno Lombardi and Joseph Jones.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Velasco shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Velasco (2) vs (0) Roth Velasco wants to pass the guard but Roth is keeping the position. Velasco trying to control the position from guard on top but Roth is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Roth looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Velasco forces his way into half guard. Velasco is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Roth still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Roth has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work! Score +4 for clean sweep to past guard: Velasco (2) vs (4) Roth Velasco is trying to get back to half guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Roth is looking to take a break and control but Velasco is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
That's one minute gone in the round. Velasco is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Roth wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Velasco, who protects the arm well. Velasco wants to control but Roth postures up. Velasco is trying to improve his position. Roth looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Roth tries for a kimura but Velasco is defending well. Roth tries to advance to mount but can't. Velasco really is a fat lump. Roth gets to mount! Velasco was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly. Score +2 for reaching mount: Velasco (2) vs (6) Roth Velasco sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though. Velasco is looking to improve his position.
Roth is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Velasco doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Roth.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Velasco moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Velasco keeping full guard, as Roth tries to pass. Roth passes Velasco's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Velasco looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Roth is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Velasco doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Roth.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Velasco is pressing down on Roth's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Velasco controls Roth momentarily but Roth frees himself. Roth stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Velasco swivels though and keeps the full guard. Velasco throws his legs up looking for a submission but Roth uses it to pass to side control.
Score +3 for passing guard: Velasco (2) vs (9) Roth Velasco is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Roth is one step ahead and moves to full mount! Score +2 for reaching mount: Velasco (2) vs (11) Roth Roth avoids the attempt from Velasco to control.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Roth swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Velasco is now in Roth's guard. A big mistake from Roth there, giving up the dominant position! Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Velasco (4) vs (11) Roth Roth is looking to cinch up a triangle. Velasco throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Roth's body to avoid the submission. Roth has instead reached around Velasco's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Roth arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.
