Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Jake Shields (ranked 884 p4p, 1871 weight class) and Somporn Metharom (ranked 113 p4p, 255 weight class). Shields kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Seven Nation Army. Metharom has chosen Porcelain - Moby as his entrance music. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jake Shields!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Somporn Metharom!
The judges for this bout are Johanna Lukiainen, Anni Minnemäki and Arvi Lind.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Metharom slips under a jab.
Shields moves away from the strike by Metharom.
Shields throws a head kick that misses
and Metharom counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Shields is lucky that one didn't land flush.
Shields avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Somporn Metharom seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Shields takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Shields misses with a takedown attempt
and Metharom counters with a lovely shot to the body.
A punch lands to the side of Shields 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Shields throws a series of punches but Metharom avoids them all with ease.
Metharom displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Shields.

Shields dives in and scores a takedown into Metharom's guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Metharom tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Shields drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Shields jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Metharom has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Shields is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.

Metharom breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.

Metharom scores with the left hand. Shields knows he should have avoided that one.

Metharom lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

Somporn Metharom is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Shields closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Metharom to the mat! Metharom manages to get full guard.

Metharom seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Shields forces his way into half guard.
Metharom is looking for a sweep. Shields is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Metharom is trying to stand.
Shields wants to pass the guard but Metharom is defending well.

Shields is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Metharom has managed to free his arm - good work.

Metharom wants to improve his position but Shields is controlling well.

Metharom makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Metharom.
Shields trying to control but Metharom is working from the bottom.

Metharom might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Shields haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
Metharom has Shields pulled in close to control his posture.

Shields stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Metharom swivels though and keeps the full guard.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Shields tries to pull guard but Metharom holds him up against the cage and eventually Shields drops back down to his feet.
A frustrated look appears on Shields's face as he tries to break the clinch.
Shields drops down looking for an ankle pick but Metharom pulls his leg out and moves away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jake Shields. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Shields misses with an uppercut. Metharom saw that one coming.
Shields takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
Metharom thuds a left hand into Shields's body.
Metharom jabs Shields to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Metharom cracks Shields on the jaw with a powerful right hand and Shields falls backwards against the cage. Metharom follows up with more strikes that drop Shields to his knees. Metharom keeps the pressure on and the referee jumps in to save Shields! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:31 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Somporn Metharom!
