This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the super heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of New York, with a TWGC record of 39 wins and 17 losses; Shaka Zulu! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Tokyo, with a TWGC record of 9 wins and 6 losses; Sergey Makarov! The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Felipe Paraventi and Alexandre Firmino.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Makarov fails to land the takedown. Makarov shoots for a takedown but Zulu saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. Zulu has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Makarov shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Zulu (0) vs (2) Makarov Makarov prevents Zulu from improving his position. My spies in Globo Gym inform me that Makarov has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends! That's ten minutes gone in the round. Zulu has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent. Zulu seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Makarov for as long as he can get away with. Zulu has the hooks in. Makarov is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted. Zulu not allowing Makarov to control his hands. Zulu controlling the position well here. Makarov rolled but Zulu kept the hooks locked in and stayed in the dominant position.

It looks like Makarov might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it.
