This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the welterweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Hilo, with a TWGC record of 2 wins and 0 losses; Mr Penn! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Amsterdam, with a TWGC record of 6 wins and 1 losses; Cody Harris! The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, John Kavanagh and Joseph Jones.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Penn fails with the takedown and Harris holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch. Penn drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Harris gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Penn.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mr Penn. That's going to take a lot out of him. Harris is trying to trip Penn. He has hold of a leg but Penn is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Harris persists though and gets the takedown into guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Penn wants to sweep here but Harris controlling him for the moment. Penn is working hard here to advance position. Penn controls Harris momentarily but Harris frees himself.
That's one minute gone in the round. Penn bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Harris's guard. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Penn (2) vs (2) Harris Penn looking to pass the guard. Penn has gone for a leg lock! Harris slips out almost immediately though and dives into Penn's guard. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Penn (2) vs (4) Harris Harris is fighting to break Penn's control of his arms but Penn is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Harris stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Penn swivels though and keeps the full guard. Harris looks winded! Penn is pulling down on Harris's head. Harris can't keep his opponent in guard - Penn advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount. Penn wants to free his trapped foot but Harris is holding on for dear life with his legs. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Harris is pressing down on Penn's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Penn looking to pass the guard. Harris not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Penn works a leg free and moves into half guard. Penn wants to control but Harris is keeping him busy. Penn moves into full mount! Harris won't be happy about that! Score +3 for passing guard: Penn (7) vs (4) Harris
That's three minutes gone in the round. Penn with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Penn jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Harris is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Harris and Penn has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Penn is in a dominant position here, looking for a kimura. Harris looks calm but he's in trouble here. Penn gets his leg over his opponent's head and yanks on the arm. Harris is tapping like a morse code operator on the titanic! SOS! SOS! Penn lets go of the hold and Harris can pop his arm back in it's socket.
