PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Bum Fighter (ranked 24258 p4p, 5094 weight class) and Nick Needle (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 8 - 0, fighting out of London, Bum Fighter!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Nick Needle!
The judges for this bout are Phil Schofield, Chris Edwards and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Fighter bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Needle looks really tired already! That doesn't bode well for a good, competitive fight!

Fighter is trying to get an arm triangle but Needle is defending well.
Needle is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Needle is not in a great position here, taking some shots.
Fighter trying to control the position but Needle is working away.
Fighter in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Needle is pushing Fighter's head away, looking to escape. Fighter manages to hold on to the position though.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Fighter stands up and we're back to a striking position.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Needle has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.

Fighter looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.

Fighter seems to be looking for submissions.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Fighter is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Fighter lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Needle is looking for a sweep. Fighter is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Fighter looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Needle with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Well, if Fighter is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
Fighter wants to take a breather but Needle is having none of it.
Fighter not doing much here.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Fighter is trying to control the action in half guard but Needle is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Needle closes this distance looking for a takedown but Fighter circles away.
Fighter throws a sloppy head kick and Needle moves out of range easily.

Fighter darts in and clinches Needle up against the cage.
Needle is trying to break free.
Fighter manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

Fighter has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Needle uses from the top position.
Needle pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Fighter is keeping the position for now.

Fighter working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Needle doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Needle manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Fighter trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Fighter working a defensive guard but Needle passes into half guard.
Fighter wants to control but Needle is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Fighter wants to get back to his feet.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Needle sitting and controlling from the half guard.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Bum Fighter dominated that round.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!

Needle shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.

Fighter clinches.

Fighter breaks the clinch.

Fighter clinches up against the cage.

Fighter drags the fight down to the ground.
Fighter looking to control.
Needle stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Fighter swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Needle working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Needle won't allow Fighter to sweep him here.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Needle slips nicely into half guard.
Fighter is trying to control but can't.
Needle trying to mount his opponent but Fighter defends it.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Needle is defended easily by Fighter.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Fighter changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Needle tries to avoid it but Fighter manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Needle to the ground. Needle escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Needle tries to clinch but Fighter moves out of range.
Needle fails with a takedown attempt.
Fighter half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Bum Fighter has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Nick Needle.

Fighter shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Needle's guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Fighter trying to control the position from guard on top but Needle is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Needle working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Fighter.
Needle manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Fighter manages to get himself to full guard.

Bum Fighter overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
Fighter is pulling down on Needle's head to control his posture.
Needle trying to control the position from guard on top but Fighter is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Needle is looking to advance position but Fighter has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!


That's four minutes gone in the round.
Needle is squirming around, avoiding Fighter's attempts to control the action.
Fighter avoids the attempt from Needle to control.
Fighter is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Needle can do to turn this around?
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Fighter scores with a couple of good head shots there.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Bum Fighter dominated that second round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Needle misses with a hook. Fighter ducked under it nicely.

Fighter looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Needle avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Fighter.
Fighter content to control rather than advance.
Fighter seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Fighter working Needle over with strikes.
Needle takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Fighter tries to stand but his arm is trapped.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Fighter is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Fighter trying to mount his opponent but Needle defends it.
Needle blocking the ground and pound attempt from Fighter.
Fighter wants to lay and pray for a moment but Needle keeps working.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Fighter moves into the clinch.
Fighter presses Needle against the cage and delivers a mid-strength body shot.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Fighter is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Needle gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Fighter breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Fighter slaps away a takedown attempt from Needle, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Fighter went nuts there looking for a big combo counter but none of the flurry connected.
Fighter tries for a takedown but Needle sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Despite the aggression on Needle's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
Needle fails with the takedown.
Fighter throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Needle.

Needle shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Needle showed some decent athleticism there.

Fighter kicks off Needle and gets to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Fighter feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Fighter looking to sit in guard and control but Needle gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Fighter looking for a sweep. Not yet Fighter, not yet.
Needle works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Fighter won't allow Needle to pass to mount.
Fighter is looking to improve his position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Fighter wants to control the action here but instead Needle manages to pass to full mount!

Fighter tries to improve his position but Needle has taken his back! Needle has a choke - it's sunk in pretty tight... Will Fighter tap? No... maybe... yes! He's tapped! Needle pushes Fighter away and gets up to celebrate with his corner!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:37 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Nick Needle!
