Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Damian Maia!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Evangalista Santos!
The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Seu Braga and Emerson Jorge.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Maia is defended easily by Santos.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Santos displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Maia.

Santos shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Maia's guard.

Santos got a little sloppy there for a moment and Maia has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Santos has managed to get both his arms back between Maia's legs - danger averted.
Santos must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Santos stands and steps away. Maia gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Maia misses with a takedown

and Santos counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Damian Maia. That's going to take a lot out of him.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Maia wants to control but Santos is keeping busy.
Santos wants to stand up but Maia has a hold of him and won't allow it.

Maia actively working from the bottom here.
It looks like Santos is going to stand back up.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Maia tries to roll over but Santos keeps him under control.
Maia is not content to let Santos control the position.
Santos sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Maia defending well though.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Santos manages to break the clinch.
Santos throws a head kick that misses.
Maia tries for a takedown but Santos circles away easily

and Santos counters by moving into the clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Maia fails to pull guard.
Maia fails to pull the fight into his guard.

Santos breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Santos scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Maia is breathing heavily.
Santos throws a leg kick but Maia checks it.

Santos is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Maia's half guard.

Santos decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.
Santos throws a sloppy head kick and Maia moves out of range easily.
Santos scores with a sloppy right hand. Maia should have avoided that one.


It looks like Damian Maia has been cut.
Maia doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Santos counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.

Santos closes the distance and clinches.
Maia tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Santos.
Maia goes for a takedown attempt but Santos pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

Santos gets a takedown into half guard.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Santos stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Santos misses with a head kick.
Maia misses with a takedown attempt

and Santos counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.

Maia has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Santos should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Maia has tightened it up now! Santos should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:54 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Damian Maia!
