PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Eder Freitas (ranked 4104 p4p, 4330 weight class) and Ibushi Kota (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kota comes into a darkened arena with his song building. Just Close Your Eyes kicks in, the lights come on and the crowd goes wild! What a showman! Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Eder Freitas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ibushi Kota!
The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Matheus Silva and Thiago Cunha.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Freitas has managed to clinch.

Freitas turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Kota seems a little lost for a moment, as Freitas dominates the positioning.
The ground and pound from Freitas seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Freitas is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Freitas lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Kota down.
Kota tries to escape but Freitas is in control.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
The ground and pound from Freitas seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
Kota wants to get back to his feet but Freitas drags him back down.
Freitas tries to advance to mount but can't.
Kota dodges the ground and pound from Freitas.

Kota is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Freitas has just dragged him back down to the mat.

Freitas stands up and beckons Kota to his feet.
Kota tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Kota moves into range and clinches up with Freitas.

Freitas drags the fight down to the ground.
Freitas controlling Kota's posture.
Kota wants to control from the top but Freitas keeps moving.

Kota got a little sloppy there for a moment and Freitas has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Kota has managed to get both his arms back between Freitas's legs - danger averted.

Kota trying to control the position from guard on top but Freitas is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Freitas's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Kota would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Freitas throws a head kick that misses.

Kota gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Freitas chips away with some ground and pound.
Kota can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Freitas controls the pace.
Kota is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Freitas has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Freitas forces his way into half guard.
Freitas passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Kota!

Kota tries to reverse the position but Freitas maintains control.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.


Freitas fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Kota to the ground. Freitas is now in Kota's guard.
Kota wants to stand and escape but Freitas is having none of it.
Freitas distracts Kota with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

Freitas decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Kota fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Freitas avoids it really well and circles away.
Kota tries to clinch up.
It looked like Freitas was looking amped, ready to throw a big counter but didn't commit.
Freitas throws a series of punches but Kota avoids them all with ease.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Kota enables Freitas to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Kota manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Kota is wriggling around but Freitas manages to pass to half guard.
Kota is breathing heavily.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Freitas is controlling the pace.

Freitas is working for a kimura but Kota is defending it quite comfortably.

Freitas seems to be looking for submissions.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Freitas lands a nice short elbow.

Freitas seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Kota for as long as he can get away with.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Freitas tries to bum rush Kota with a series of wild strikes but Kota uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Kota tries to clinch but Freitas moves out of range.
Freitas pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Kota connects with a solid leg kick.
A low kick lands for Kota.
Kota misses with a head kick.
Kota tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Freitas manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Eder Freitas dominated that second round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!

Freitas closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Kota to the mat! Kota manages to get full guard.
Kota is trying to control the position but Freitas postures up.
Freitas loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Kota dives in for a single leg takedown but Freitas sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Kota is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Freitas is defending well for now.

Freitas has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Kota uses from the top position.

Kota has his foot on Freitas's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Freitas works his way back into a safe position though.

and Freitas counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Kota!

Freitas has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.

Ibushi Kota has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Freitas jumps guard but Kota turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing.

Well Freitas has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
