PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Andor Kovacs (ranked 2601 p4p, 4275 weight class) and Afonso Padilha (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Kovacs has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 16 - 13 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, Andor Kovacs! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Afonso Padilha! The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Ren Mimura and Shigeki Sano.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Padilha misses with an uppercut. Kovacs saw that one coming. Kovacs looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Padilha is trying to stand up here but Kovacs is controlling him well. Kovacs missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Padilha is looking to escape. Kovacs is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Padilha defends it well. Kovacs works his foot free and advances to mount. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Kovacs looking to secure an arm triangle but Padilha defends it well.
That's one minute gone in the round. Padilha is really trying hard to get back to his feet.

Padilha's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up. Kovacs takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Kovacs jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Padilha manages to avoid the submission attempt. Padilha wants to get back to his feet but Kovacs drags him back down. Kovacs looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Padilha is avoiding damage well.
Padilha tries to wriggle free to get back to his feet but he's given up his back! Oops. Padilha is trying to stand back up. Kovacs looking for the choke but no joy. Padilha really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Kovacs. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Padilha is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Kovacs.
Kovacs is working for the choke. He's slipped one arm under the chin. Padilha has to defend the other arm for all he's worth... but Kovacs has managed to get that arm free too and he's tightening the choke! Padilha taps out and looks absolutely disgusted with himself. Kovacs doesn't care though - he's delighted!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:53 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Andor Kovacs! A very excited looking Andor Kovacs rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
