PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Wala Sapi (ranked 24418 p4p, 24542 weight class) and Yawa Kiang (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 23 - 28 - 3, fighting out of Las Vegas, Wala Sapi!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 22 - 31 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Yawa Kiang!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Tiny Johnson and Robert Twigg.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight.

Sapi drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Sapi trying to control the action but Kiang is working from the bottom.
Kiang holding on.
Sapi is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

That's one minute gone in the round.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Sapi in the domination position with Kiang hanging on.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Kiang is looking to reverse the position.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Sapi decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.

Sapi trying to control the pace.
Sapi's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

Kiang keeping control of the leg, stopping his opponent passing to mount.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Sapi slows the pace down in half guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Kiang walks forward, straight into a front kick from Sapi.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Sapi manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Kiang on his heels. He'll look to pass Kiang's guard now, I'm sure.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Sapi is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Kiang pulls Sapi in close to his closed guard and prevents Sapi from doing any damage or advancing position.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Wala Sapi dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Kiang dives in and grabs Sapi's left leg, looking for a takedown. Sapi pushes down on Kiang's head and hops out.

Kiang shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Sapi napping and manages to drive through into side control!

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Kiang just content to control the position.
Kiang scores with punches from side control.
Sapi is letting Kiang control him for a moment.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Sapi shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Kiang sprawls well. Kiang wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Sapi gets slowly back to his feet.
Kiang is trying to counter with his kicks.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Sapi is trying hard to land a takedown here. Kiang sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Kiang counters with a body kick.
Kiang dives in for a single leg takedown but Sapi sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Horrible takedown attempt by Sapi or perhaps it was just good defense by Kiang, which made it look bad.
Kiang raises up his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Wala Sapi. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Sapi shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Kiang as he avoids it easily.
Kiang lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.

Kiang tries to sprawl but Sapi drives through with a takedown into half guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Kiang is controlling Sapi's trapped leg to prevent Sapi from advancing to side control.
Still in half guard, Sapi seems content to control.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Kiang wants to control but Sapi is keeping busy.
Kiang holds on for dear life, maintaining half guard for now.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Kiang is trying to maintain the position but Sapi is very close to passing his half guard.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Sapi shoots in looking for a takedown. Kiang tries to sprawl out of it but Sapi keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Kiang manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
And Kiang responds with a good body kick, but Sapi manages to step out the way in time.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Yawa Kiang showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. Let's get this one finished - here comes the final round!

Sapi throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.
Sapi changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Kiang tries to avoid it but Sapi manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Kiang to the ground. Kiang escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Kiang follows through with a counter body kick but it doesn't land.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kiang fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Sapi tries to counter by clinching up but Kiang breaks away and moves out of range.

Kiang is trying hard to land a takedown here. Sapi sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Sapi darts in looking for a takedown but Kiang gets double underhooks and turns Sapi into the cage.
Kiang steps in looking to counter with the mid kick but it doesn't connect.
Kiang tries for a takedown but Sapi manages to get underhooks.
Wala Sapi has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Yawa Kiang.
Kiang is working on a leg, looking for a takedown but Sapi is defending well.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Sapi is working for takedown but Kiang is calmly controlling the position for now.

Kiang has hold of one of Sapi's legs. Sapi is fighting the takedown attempt but Kiang gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Sapi wants to stand up but Kiang is controlling him.

Sapi is pulling down on Kiang's head to control his posture.
Kiang trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Sapi is controlling Kiang's posture.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Sapi shoots in and drives through. Kiang sprawls well.
Kiang is trying to counter with his kicks.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Sapi keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
It appears Sapi was looking to counter with a kick there.

And that's the end of the fight!
Yawa Kiang comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Kiang has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
