And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 23 - 20 - 1, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ralphie Maldonado!
The judges for this bout are Yasuomi Hirokawa, Tatsuya Matsuyama and Shirou Masuda.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maldonado changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.

Maldonado pivots, looking for a leg kick but Gomes is out of range and Maldonado settles back down.
Maldonado throws a body punch but Gomes moves out of range.
The fight stays on the outside here - Gomes looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Gomes throws a nice hook to the body that draws an oooh from the crowd.
Gomes fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Maldonado on the side of the head.

Ralphie Maldonado seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Maldonado connects with a body shot that sends Gomes's belly button to the back.

Maldonado works for underhooks and lands a body shot in the process.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Gomes swings wildly with an uppercut but Maldonado uses good head movement to avoid it.

Maldonado wants to break the clinch but can't.
Maldonado escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Maldonado avoiding damage.
Maldonado will no doubt start fighting again in a minute but for now he's just having a little rest, leaning Gomes up against the cage.
The crowd are getting on Maldonado's back here. They're not happy about his lack of aggression in the clinch.
Maldonado doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Gomes throws a head punch that misses.
Maldonado wants to push off and get back to the center of the mat but Gomes has him pressed against the cage.

Gomes lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Maldonado or not.
Maldonado breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Gomes moves away from the strike by Maldonado.

and Gomes counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Maldonado tries to roll over but Gomes keeps him under control.
Maldonado is trying to stand up here but Gomes is controlling him well.
Gomes takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Gomes steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Maldonado.
Gomes uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Maldonado.
Maldonado missing with a left hand there. Gomes was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Maldonado connects with a body shot that sends Gomes's belly button to the back.

Maldonado ducks low and lands a nice hook to the body of his opponent.

Gomes half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range.
Maldonado throws a leg kick but Gomes moved away.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Maldonado scores with a jab. Gomes acknowledges it with a nod of the head.
Maldonado takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily.

Maldonado lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Gomes at a distance.
Gomes has not gone for a single takedown so far in this fight, which seems like a very strange tactic when you consider that he has the superior wrestling and BJJ.

and Gomes counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Maldonado throws out a loose jab but Gomes uses good head movement to avoid it.
Gomes keeping his hands up high there, blocking the jab from Maldonado.
Gomes ducks under a wild hook from Maldonado.
Gomes walks into a straight right hand from Maldonado.
Gomes just misses with a punch to the body.
Gomes gets caught by a big overhand right and goes down! Maldonado gets on top of him and starts throwing some serious punches until the ref intervenes and stops the fight!
