This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the super heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of New York, with a TWGC record of 19 wins and 25 losses; Boris Balkan! And in the blue corner, fighting out of New York, with a TWGC record of 29 wins and 19 losses; Jackson Ramirez! The judges for this bout are John Roberts, John Kavanagh and Dean Styles.
The official calls the fighters to the middle and the contest is under way. Balkan shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Balkan (2) vs (0) Ramirez Balkan seems to be working for a kimura but Ramirez defends the submission attempt. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Balkan in particular looking to stall. Balkan will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Balkan is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Ramirez defends it well. Ramirez told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet. Balkan seems to be working for a kimura but Ramirez defends the submission attempt. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Balkan is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Ramirez has managed to free his arm - good work. Balkan looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Balkan drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Ramirez manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Balkan has Ramirez in his guard. That's two minutes gone in the round. Balkan wants to sweep but no luck. Balkan has his foot on Ramirez's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Ramirez works his way back into a safe position though. Ramirez sitting in guard here, content to control. Balkan isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Ramirez stacks Balkan on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Ramirez! We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Ramirez can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Balkan is looking to escape. Ramirez controlling the position easily from mount.

Balkan is working hard here to advance position. We've been hearing good reports from Balkan's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. I would not like to be Balkan right now.

Good control from Ramirez. Balkan just trying to survive but Ramirez is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish. Balkan tries to escape but Ramirez has the hooks in and won't let him break free. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Balkan is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Ramirez pulls his head out easily. Ramirez seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Balkan does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Balkan is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Balkan tries to lock up and control but Ramirez gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Ramirez tries to control but Balkan wriggling away. Balkan sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
