CWC 383 PBP Commentary |
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the welterweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of Rio de Janeiro, with a TWGC record of 27 wins and 20 losses; Tommy Toehold! And in the blue corner, fighting out of New York, with a TWGC record of 51 wins and 18 losses; John Lee! The judges for this bout are Luis Engracia, Seu Braga and Thiago Cunha.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Lee moves into range and clinches up with Toehold. Lee drops down looking for an ankle pick but Toehold pulls his leg out and moves away.
Toehold tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Lee swivels and escapes. Lee clinches up against the cage. Lee is looking to take this one to the mat. Toehold ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Toehold no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard. Lee postures up.
Toehold wants to sweep here but Lee controlling him for the moment. Toehold has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Toehold wants to sweep here but Lee controlling him for the moment.
That's one minute gone in the round. Lee is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Lee's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige. Toehold is pulling down on Lee's head to control his posture.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Lee is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Toehold wants to sweep here but Lee controlling him for the moment. Lee sitting in guard, not really doing much.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Toehold managing to control the position. Lee pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Toehold is keeping the position for now. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Toehold managing to control the position. Lee tries to free his leg and advance position but Toehold is retaining full guard. Toehold seems keen to control Lee's posture.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Toehold being controlled here, momentarily. Toehold looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Lee puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard. Lee seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense. Let's hope that Lee has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
That's six minutes gone in the round. Toehold preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head. Lee perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. We're seeing a lot of stalling here from Lee.

That's eight minutes gone in the round. Lee tries to pass the half guard into mount. Toehold knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Lee is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Yet more stalling tactics from Lee. Toehold wants to get back to full guard.

It looks like Lee might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. Toehold wants to hold on but Lee pushes him away.
That's ten minutes gone in the round. Lee controlling from the full mount. Lee trying to control but he's not successful this time. Lee sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Toehold tries to control the position but Lee now has his back.

That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Toehold rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
Toehold is concentrating on defense, preventing Lee from advancing position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Lee takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Lee is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Toehold reverses the position - he's now on top in Lee's guard. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Toehold (2) vs (6) Lee Toehold is fighting to break Lee's control of his arms but Lee is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment.
That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Lee looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Lee manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Toehold manages to get himself to full guard.

That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Lee slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Toehold has Lee pulled in close to control his posture.
That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Lee sitting in guard here, content to control. Toehold seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now. Lee is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Toehold keeping full guard, as Lee tries to pass.
