Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, John Gunderson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Paul Penn! The judges for this bout are , Frank Antenori and Jack Bonds.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gunderson misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out. Gunderson shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Penn scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Penn working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Penn throwing strikes but missing, from side control. Penn wants to lay and pray for a moment but Gunderson keeps working. Gunderson tries to bench press Penn off him but Penn keeps the position. Penn trying to control the position but Gunderson is working away. Gunderson is looking to regain half guard here but Penn keeps moving and retains side control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Penn working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Penn tries to land with some ground and pound but misses. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Gunderson tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Penn wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Gunderson with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Gunderson changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Penn looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better. Penn is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Gunderson's leg. He's managed it. Nice work. Gunderson is stalling here. Penn is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Gunderson seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Penn has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Penn decides to take the fight back to the feet. Left hook, right uppercut from Penn. Gunderson is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Gunderson throws a feint and then finishes with a kick to the body. Penn closes the distance looking to clinch and Gunderson counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Gunderson. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Penn is trying to control the position but Gunderson postures up. Gunderson knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Penn on the ground.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Penn controlling the position. Gunderson is breathing heavily. Gunderson trying to control but Penn is working from the bottom. Penn has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Gunderson should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Penn has tightened it up now! Gunderson should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
