PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Arthur Pugsley (ranked 1448 p4p, 2201 weight class) and Tarrell Newsome (ranked 131 p4p, 194 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Arthur Pugsley!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 6 - 1, fighting out of New York, Tarrell Newsome!
The judges for this bout are Alan Glass, Frank Dennis and George Francis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Newsome misses with a combination

and Pugsley counters with a nice double leg into side control. Newsome won't be happy with that.

Pugsley is trying to get an arm triangle but Newsome is defending well.
Newsome gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
Newsome tries to get back to half guard but can't.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Newsome is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.

Pugsley has control of Newsome's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Newsome regains control of the situation pretty easily.

Pugsley is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Newsome to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Newsome shrugs it off.

Newsome is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Pugsley avoids the attempt from Newsome to control.
Newsome really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Pugsley. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Newsome really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Newsome tries to hold on but Pugsley pushes him away.
Newsome is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Newsome slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.

Pugsley is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound.

Pugsley looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Newsome has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Pugsley is working away from the top position though.
Newsome might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Pugsley haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Newsome keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
We've been hearing that Pugsley has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish.
Pugsley slips a nice elbow through Newsome's hands, connecting with Newsome's forehead.
Pugsley is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Newsome is looking for a sweep. Pugsley is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Newsome avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Pugsley.
Nice strikes from Pugsley there.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Pugsley connects with a nice short shot to Newsome's temple.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Pugsley lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Arthur Pugsley dominated that round.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Newsome is moving around nicely and scores here with a single head shot.
Newsome missing with a left hand there. Pugsley was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.

Pugsley forces Newsome back against the cage and clinches.
Newsome lands with a light punch inside.
Newsome misses with a body punch.
Newsome has Pugsley pressed against the cage.
Pugsley tries to pull guard but Newsome holds him up against the cage and eventually Pugsley drops back down to his feet.
Newsome goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Newsome misses with a punch to the body.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.
Newsome can't find room to land a body shot as Pugsley controls the action.
Newsome scores with a shoulder strike.
Newsome struggles to land a body shot inside as Pugsley controls his hands.
Pugsley jumps guard but Newsome stands there with Pugsley around his waist. Pugsley gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.

Newsome tries to throw a body punch but Pugsley avoids it by throwing Newsome back against the cage.
Newsome lands a nice looking hook to the body, against the cage.
Newsome doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Pugsley stalling.

Pugsley manages to pull guard. Let's see whether he can land a sub off his back.

Pugsley is looking for a triangle but Newsome pushes his legs off easily.

Newsome is posturing up here but Pugsley has hold of an arm and he's gone for an armbar! Newsome tries to roll out but it's too tight and Newsome has to tap! Slick submission there by Pugsley!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:47 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Arthur Pugsley!
