PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Viraj Mithani (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Goku Steve (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Goku Steve is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Viraj Mithani!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Goku Steve!
The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Columbo Gatti and Russell Pearce.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mithani looks to land a combination. Steve sees it coming but can only parry a couple of the shots.
Steve shoots in but Mithani avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Steve throws a sloppy head kick and Mithani moves out of range easily.
Steve closes the distance and clinches up with Mithani, looking for a takedown. Steve pushes Mithani against the cage but Mithani circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Steve does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy.
Steve changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Mithani tries to avoid it but Steve manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Mithani to the ground. Mithani escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Viraj Mithani has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Goku Steve.
Steve shoots in looking for a takedown. Mithani tries to sprawl out of it but Steve keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Mithani manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
No joy there for Mithani, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Steve looking for a guillotine here but Mithani defends easily.
Mithani controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mithani will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Mithani throws a big right hand that misses.
Mithani is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Steve keeping moving, preventing Mithani from controlling successfully.

The referee stands the fighters back up. Viraj Mithani just wasn't active enough from the dominant position.

Mithani tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Mithani has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
The referee asks Mithani politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Mithani prefers to stall for the moment though.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Mithani throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.
Steve looks to move to half guard but instead Mithani has passed into mount! Damn!
Mithani lands a heavy elbow.

Steve is working to get back to half guard.
Mithani tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Mithani shoots in looking for a takedown. Steve tries to sprawl out of it but Mithani keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Steve manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Mithani throws a right hand that Steve ducks under and follows up with a left that Steve also avoids with ease.

Mithani has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.
Mithani has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Mithani postures up in Steve's guard and throws a big left but Steve blocks it.

The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.

Mithani content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
Steve is pushing Mithani's head away, looking to escape. Mithani manages to hold on to the position though.

Mithani's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Mithani is looking for a kimura but Steve is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Mithani to get the leverage.

Mithani wants to free his trapped foot but Steve is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Mithani lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt.
Mithani is taking a breather. Steve says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Viraj Mithani overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Steve is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Mithani missing with some ground and pound from the half guard.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Mithani fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Mithani dips to his left and cracks Steve with an uppercut!
No luck for Mithani with that takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Viraj Mithani. That's going to take a lot out of him.

and Mithani counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

Horrible takedown by Mithani or perhaps it was just good defense by Steve which made him look bad.

Well Mithani has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
