This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the super heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of New York, with a TWGC record of 22 wins and 14 losses; Vasiliy Kulik! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Amsterdam, with a TWGC record of 21 wins and 27 losses; Strega Notturna! The judges for this bout are Arvi Lind, Anni Minnemäki and Tarja Halkonen.
The official calls the fighters to the middle and the contest is under way. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Notturna is defended easily by Kulik. Kulik tries to clinch up against the ropes, rushing in to close the distance. Notturna manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Notturna has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. A momentary lapse in concentration from Kulik enables Notturna to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Kulik manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Kulik tries to pass the half guard into mount. Notturna knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Kulik is thwarting Notturna's attempts to control the position.
