PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Moritz Zimmerman (ranked 827 p4p, 776 weight class) and Gotan Wasselach (ranked 126 p4p, 114 weight class). Wasselach is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Time Is On My Side by Maze. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 19 - 16 - 1, fighting out of London, Moritz Zimmerman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 11 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Gotan Wasselach!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Jack Bonds and Percy O'Donnell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Zimmerman uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Wasselach.
Zimmerman looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Wasselach swings for the body but Zimmerman moves out of range.
Zimmerman changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Wasselach lands a body shot.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Zimmerman.
Zimmerman shoots in but Wasselach avoids the takedown attempt easily.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Wasselach works the jab nicely.
Zimmerman throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Wasselach's waist but Wasselach gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Zimmerman off to one side.

Wasselach ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Zimmerman moves away.
Zimmerman attempts a counter takedown but Wasselach avoids it well and moves away.

so Zimmerman counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Wasselach pushes Zimmerman off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there.
Zimmerman shoots in looking for a takedown but Wasselach manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Zimmerman's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Gotan Wasselach is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Zimmerman gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Wasselach counters with a head kick. That will keep Zimmerman thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!

Wasselach connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there.
Zimmerman goes for a double leg but Wasselach avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Wasselach continues to drive forward.
A little jabbing left from Wasselach on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Wasselach is working Zimmerman over against the cage.
Zimmerman tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Wasselach smiles and moves away.
Wasselach looks to land a right hand but Zimmerman moved out of range.
Zimmerman changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Zimmerman dodges the punch combination from Wasselach.
Zimmerman feinted there with a counter leg kick.
Wasselach misses with a hook.

Wasselach throws out a loose jab but Zimmerman uses good head movement to avoid it.

Zimmerman shoots for a takedown but Wasselach saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.
Zimmerman shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Wasselach pinned against the cage. Wasselach gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Wasselach throws out a counter right but Zimmerman avoids it with no problem.
A big left from Wasselach misses.
Wasselach is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Zimmerman.

so Zimmerman counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.
Wasselach seems keen to control Zimmerman's posture.

Zimmerman has gone for a leg lock! Wasselach slips out almost immediately though and dives into Zimmerman's guard.

Wasselach is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Zimmerman had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Wasselach defends it easily.
Wasselach controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Zimmerman is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Wasselach passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Zimmerman is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Wasselach's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.

Zimmerman prevents Wasselach from getting the reversal.
Zimmerman misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
Zimmerman sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it!
Wasselach is wriggling around trying to escape.

Zimmerman is working for a guillotine from mount but Wasselach frees his head quite easily.
Wasselach wants to control but Zimmerman is having none of it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Zimmerman throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Wasselach because Zimmerman loaded up on that one.

Zimmerman goes for an armbar but Wasselach turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Wasselach.

Zimmerman wants to sweep here but Wasselach controlling him for the moment.

Zimmerman is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Wasselach sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Zimmerman's guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Zimmerman tries to roll over but Wasselach keeps him under control.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Moritz Zimmerman overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Wasselach in particular looking to stall.

That was a close second round but I would say that Moritz Zimmerman will probably get the nod.

Wasselach throws a hook but Zimmerman blocks it.
Zimmerman shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Wasselach as he avoids it easily.

Wasselach on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Wasselach lands a shoulder strike that jolts his opponent's head backwards.
Wasselach is looking to control Zimmerman's arms but Zimmerman gets an underhook and turns him. Now Wasselach has his back to the cage.

Zimmerman is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Wasselach can't fight it off and eventually Zimmerman manages to take the fight to the floor. Wasselach looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Wasselach has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

Zimmerman is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Wasselach is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Wasselach has escaped and now he's on top!


Wasselach got a little sloppy there for a moment and Zimmerman has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Wasselach has managed to get both his arms back between Zimmerman's legs - danger averted.

Zimmerman throws his legs up looking for a submission but Wasselach uses it to pass to side control.

Wasselach decides to stand back up. Wasselach steps back and let's Zimmerman get back to his feet.

Wasselach kicks off Zimmerman and gets to his feet.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

It looks like Moritz Zimmerman has been cut.

Wasselach misses with an uppercut. Zimmerman saw that one coming.

Wasselach has one foot on Zimmerman's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.

Zimmerman shoots in looking for a takedown. Wasselach tries to sprawl out of it but Zimmerman keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Wasselach manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Wasselach throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Zimmerman appears to be looking for a counter takedown.
Zimmerman shoots in but no luck this time.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Moritz Zimmerman. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Wasselach swings wildly with a right hand that was never going to find it's target.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Wasselach slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.

Wasselach moves into the clinch successfully.
Zimmerman drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Wasselach lands on the inside with an uppercut.

Gotan Wasselach comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Wasselach has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
