PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Edwin Valero (ranked 3231 p4p, 3242 weight class) and Eddie Young (ranked 214 p4p, 217 weight class). Eddie Young told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 1 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Edwin Valero!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Eddie Young!
The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, Eddie Farnsworth and Reed Andrews.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A jab from Young does it's job there.
Young throws a body punch but Valero moves out of range.
Young throws a right and a left that both miss.
Valero shoots and misses
and Young counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Young misses with a looping right.
A head kick misses from Young.
Valero drops down looking for a counter takedown but Young sprawls and moves away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Young throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Valero.
Valero attempts a counter takedown but Young avoids it well and moves away.
Nice sprawl there from Young as Valero shoots in.
Despite the aggression on Young's face he doesn't fully commit to the counter.
Young works Valero's body with a nice hook.

Young displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Valero.

Valero ducks under a wild hook from Young.
Young connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.

Valero is looking to pass into half guard but Young pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Young is in guard.


Young decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
Young misses with a series of wild punches.
Valero changes levels looking for a counter takedown but doesn't commit.
Young lands with a kick to the temple. Valero shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"
Eddie Young is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Young jabs Valero to the body, keeping him at a distance.
Young throws a sloppy head kick

and Valero counters with a single leg into guard. Young didn't expect that.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Valero trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Young is looking to stand up but Valero isn't so interested in that idea.
Valero advances position into side control!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Valero has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Young!

Valero swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Young is now in Valero's guard. A big mistake from Valero there, giving up the dominant position!
Valero wants to sweep here but Young controlling him for the moment.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Valero takes one to the chin there.
Young has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Valero drives through with a takedown into guard.
Valero stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Young swivels though and keeps the full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Young can't keep his opponent in guard - Valero advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Valero tries to pass the half guard into mount. Young knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Young pushes Valero off looking to stand but Valero dives back in and keeps control.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Valero is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Young has managed to free his arm - good work.
Young wants to get back to his feet.
Valero wants to pass the guard but Young is defending well.

Valero looking for a submission but Young manages to get full guard, putting an end to that submission attempt.
Valero sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Young's guard.
Valero is looking to pass Young's guard but actually Young recovers to full guard.

Valero prevents Young from getting back to his feet.
Valero tries to free his leg and advance position but Young is retaining full guard.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Valero is looking to advance position but Young has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

Valero tries to reverse the position but Young maintains control.

Young get's back to his feet.
Left hook, right uppercut from Young.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.
Young lands with a right hand.
Valero with a lazy takedown attempt
and Young counters with a quick right hand to the jaw.
Young lands a nice shot to the body.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Valero tries for a takedown but Young sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Young lets it all go there with a big combo counter but none of the punches connected.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Valero gets cracked there but stands up to it.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Eddie Young showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Let's hear some noise people - this is the final round!

Valero tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Young swivels and escapes.
Valero moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
Young slaps away a takedown attempt from Valero, before circling back to the center of the mat.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Young lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

Valero fails with a takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Edwin Valero. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Young's corner calls for a 1, 2 combination and Young duly obliges.
Young scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!

Young drops Valero with a right and a left! Young comes rushing in but Valero regains his composure and manages to keep Young in guard.

Valero is rocked!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Young decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Valero, up you get!
Oh Valero is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Young lands a lovely overhand right.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Young throws a shot to the body.
Valero walks straight into a right hand from Young - that's dropped him! Young jumps into mount and starts pounding away - can he finish?! More strikes go undefended and the referee has to dive in to save Valero from any more punishment! Valero complains about the stoppage but falls over as he tries to stand back up, so it was clearly a good stoppage.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:13 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Punches). Eddie Young!
