PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Howard Clay (ranked 3214 p4p, 24710 weight class) and David Snake (ranked 375 p4p, 570 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that David Snake was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Howard Clay!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, David Snake!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Matti Vanhoillinen and Ben Zyskovitsi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Clay forces Snake back against the cage and clinches.
Clay prevents a body shot from Snake.
Stalling in the clinch from Clay.
Snake digs a right hand underneath Clay's ribcage. Clay let out a lung full of air as it connected.
Clay tries a body shot but Snake blocks it.
Snake swings wildly with an uppercut but Clay uses good head movement to avoid it.
Clay scores with a hook to the body.
Clay dictating the pace here, as the fighters clinch against the cage.
Snake struggles to land a body shot inside as Clay controls his hands.
Snake swings away with an uppercut that misses.

Clay successfully pulls guard.
Snake must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Snake won't allow Clay to sweep him here.
Clay not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Clay controlling the position.
Snake really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Clay. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Snake working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Clay's head.
Snake is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.

Clay had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Snake defends it easily.

Clay escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Snake gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Clay is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Snake makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.
Clay avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Snake being controlled here momentarily.
Snake trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Clay manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Snake manages to get himself to full guard.

Snake looking to hit a scissor sweep but Clay is one step ahead there.

Snake is pulling down on Clay's head to control his posture.
Clay controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Snake looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Clay tries to free his leg and advance position but Snake is retaining full guard.

Clay drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Clay jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Snake has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Clay is working away from the top position though.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

Snake tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Clay was well out of range. Poor timing from Snake.
Snake ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Clay moves away.

Clay drags the fight down to the ground.
Clay tries to land a sweep but no joy.

Snake avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Snake got a little sloppy there for a moment and Clay has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Snake has managed to get both his arms back between Clay's legs - danger averted.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Clay is on top in guard.

Snake seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

Snake should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.
Clay wants to control from the top but Snake keeps moving.

Clay thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Clay is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Snake can do to turn this around?
Clay stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Snake swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Snake has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Snake keeping moving, preventing Clay from controlling successfully.
Clay forces his way into half guard.
Snake is trying to maintain the position but Clay is very close to passing his half guard.
Clay wants to free his trapped foot but Snake is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Snake is controlling Clay's position as best he can from this difficult position.
Snake tries to get to full guard but Clay has control of the leg.
Snake is looking to control Clay's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Snake avoid being mounted?
Clay wants to lay and pray for a moment but Snake keeps working.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

Clay has taken the fight to the clinch.
Snake is looking to control Clay's arms but Clay gets an underhook and turns him. Now Snake has his back to the cage.

Clay is refusing to be controlled, as Snake sits in half guard.

Clay is doing well to control the position and prevent Snake from advancing to side control.

Snake seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Clay does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Clay manages to get to full guard.
Clay looking to hit a scissor sweep but Snake is one step ahead there.
Clay controls Snake momentarily but Snake frees himself.
Clay bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Snake's guard.

Snake tries to keep at a distance but Clay has taken the fight into the clinch.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.

Snake breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Clay doesn't manage to clinch there - Snake circles away.
Snake misses with a wild body shot.
Snake misses with a low kick.

Clay changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Snake looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Snake is trying to improve his position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Snake wants to control but Clay postures up.
Clay passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Snake!

Clay jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Snake is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Snake and Clay has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.

Snake is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Clay tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Clay looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Snake is looking for a sweep.
Snake is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
Clay is controlling the pace.

Clay is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Snake sees it coming and defends easily.
David Snake has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Clay looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.

Clay is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Clay takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Snake is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Clay jumps into side control!

Clay is looking to take a break and control but Snake is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

Clay is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Snake is trying to escape and Clay transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Snake is forced to tap! Nice work there by Clay! Very nice indeed!
