And in the blue corner, fighting out of New York, with a TWGC record of 4 wins and 4 losses; Roman Kersikov! The judges for this bout are James Atkins, Chris Edwards and Phil Schofield.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Matariki closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Kersikov quickly recovers to half guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Matariki (2) vs (0) Kersikov Kersikov is looking to improve his position.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Matariki trying to mount his opponent but Kersikov defends it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Matariki takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Kersikov is holding on to half guard well. Matariki not doing much here.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Kersikov is looking for a sweep. Matariki is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Matariki trying to control the pace. Matariki seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Kersikov for as long as he can get away with.

Kersikov preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head. Matariki trying to pass the guard but Kersikov defending well. Kersikov is positioning himself well to prevent Matariki advancing to mount.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Kersikov wants to get back to full guard. Matariki passes the guard and advances to mount! That's five minutes gone in the round. Kersikov tries to lock up and control but Matariki gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away. Kersikov is trying desperately to improve position. Matariki controlling the position easily from mount. Kersikov felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it. Matariki avoids the attempt from Kersikov to control.
That's six minutes gone in the round. Matariki fails to advance to Kersikov's back. Kersikov tries to lock up and control but Matariki gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. Matariki tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position. Matariki's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground. Matariki fails to take his opponent's back. Kersikov keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
That's eight minutes gone in the round. Kersikov tries to hold on but Matariki pushes him away. Matariki takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Matariki controlling from mount. Kersikov bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done! That's ten minutes gone in the round. Kersikov controlling his opponent. Kersikov's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige. Kersikov wants to control the pace but Matariki is squirming around nicely.
That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Kersikov controlling the position easily from mount. Matariki is trying to reverse the position but instead Kersikov has taken his back - oops! Score +3 for taking back: Matariki (5) vs (8) Kersikov Kersikov biding his time, looking for the opening.
Kersikov is hanging on to Matariki's back as he tries to escape.
That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Matariki wants to escape the position but for the time being he's just trying to control the pace. I really don't envy Matariki right now.
Matariki is working hard here to advance position. Matariki is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at SSJ Gym, so we'll see if he gets out of it.
That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Kersikov has the hooks sunk in and you can see the will to fight slowly draining out of Matariki's body.
Matariki looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment. So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.
That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. I really don't envy Matariki right now.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! What can Matariki do to escape this position? He's going to have to figure it out pretty quick if he wants to stay in the fight!
