PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Yawa Kiang (ranked 24015 p4p, 23949 weight class) and Way Nada (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 27 - 40 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Yawa Kiang! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 30 - 37 - 1, fighting out of Las Vegas, Way Nada! The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Gwen Towbar and Tiny Johnson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight. Kiang looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Nada! Nada being controlled for a moment. Nada on the wrong end of some ground and pound. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Nada can't do much from the bottom here. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Nada has one of Kiang's arms on lockdown, trying to prevent him from doing any damage.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kiang tries to score with some ground and pound. Nada controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage. Kiang content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though. Nada tries to get back to half guard but can't. Kiang lands a decent elbow from side control. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
That's two minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Kiang is looking to take a break and control but Nada is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Kiang working away. Nada is trying to escape the position but Kiang is controlling the position.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Nada closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Nada content to control rather than advance. Kiang misses with some strikes from the bottom.
Well, if Nada is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Let's hope that Nada has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. Nada thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. Nada looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet. Nada leaves Kiang with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Nada follows through with a counter body kick but it doesn't land. Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Nada fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Kiang avoids it really well and circles away. Kiang is looking to counter with a body kick. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Yawa Kiang dominated that round. That's time! Back to the action!
Nada drives through with a takedown into guard. Nada stays in close to Kiang's body and controls the position. Yawa Kiang overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Kiang is adopting a defensive guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Nada controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Kiang has Nada pulled in close to control his posture. Kiang can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Nada controls the pace. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Kiang has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Nada shoots in for a takedown but Kiang shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Nada shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Kiang as he avoids it easily. Kiang throws a quick counter head kick but Nada was just out of range. Nada shoots for a double leg takedown but Kiang sprawls well. He's pushed Nada's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily. Kiang throws a quick counter kick to the body but Nada avoids it. Yawa Kiang has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Way Nada. Nada shoots in but no luck this time. Kiang throws a quick counter kick to the body but Nada avoids it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Nada darts in looking for a takedown but Kiang gets double underhooks and turns Nada into the cage. Kiang half commits to a counter takedown before pushing away, out of range. Nada throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Kiang's waist but Kiang gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Nada off to one side. Kiang throws a quick counter kick to the body but Nada avoids it. Nada throws a front kick that sends Kiang stumbling back into the cage. Nada stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Nada wants it to stay on the feet. Kiang drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Kiang is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Nada controls Kiang momentarily but Kiang frees himself. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Nada is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close second round but I would say that Yawa Kiang will probably get the nod. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round! Kiang shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Nada is trying to counter with his kicks. Kiang shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Nada's guard. Nada seems keen to control Kiang's posture. Kiang looking to control the position here, rather than advance. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Nada escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Nada now looks to counter with a shot at the body. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Yawa Kiang. That's going to take a lot out of him. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Kiang.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Nice sprawl there from Kiang as Nada shoots in. Kiang feinted there with a counter leg kick. Kiang shoots in and drives through. Nada sprawls well. Nada shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Kiang pinned against the cage. Kiang gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Kiang throws a quick counter kick to the body but Nada avoids it.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Kiang tries to score a power double leg takedown but Nada sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Kiang somewhat. Nada appears to be waiting to throw a counter punch to the body. Way Nada has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Yawa Kiang is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Kiang shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Nada pinned against the cage. Nada gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Nada is clearly trying to counter these attacks from Kiang with a body shot.
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Yawa Kiang. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Kiang, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent.
