PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Joakim Nystroem (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Hervoton Kyrpa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 1, fighting out of Helsinki, Joakim Nystroem!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Hervoton Kyrpa!
The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Roosa Järviläinen and Marco Blurström.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Nystroem throws a good cross that connects.
Good shot there by Kyrpa.
Kyrpa takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Nystroem fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Some wild striking there from Kyrpa.
Kyrpa closes the distance and clinches up with Nystroem, looking for a takedown. Kyrpa pushes Nystroem against the cage but Nystroem circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Nystroem misses with a hook. Kyrpa ducked under it nicely.
Kyrpa slips a jab from Nystroem.

Kyrpa shoots in and bounces Nystroem off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Nystroem is trying to keep Kyrpa in close.
Nystroem is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Nystroem seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Kyrpa does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Nystroem really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Kyrpa throws a wild combination but nothing lands.

Hervoton Kyrpa seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Nystroem avoids a punch combination nicely.
Kyrpa moves out of range as Nystroem strikes.

Kyrpa should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Kyrpa misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
A slow jab from Nystroem misses its intended target.
Kyrpa looks to land a combination but Nystroem avoids it well.

Kyrpa uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Nystroem.
Nystroem misses with an uppercut. Kyrpa saw that one coming.
Kyrpa thows a body shot but no joy.

Nystroem shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Nystroem is breathing heavily.
Kyrpa wants to stand but Nystroem is controlling the position.
Nystroem is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Nystroem pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Kyrpa is keeping the position for now.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Kyrpa looking to hit a scissor sweep but Nystroem is one step ahead there.

Nystroem passes Kyrpa's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Nystroem stops Kyrpa from getting back to his feet.
Nystroem is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Kyrpa!
Nystroem trying to control but Kyrpa is having none of it.
Nystroem is looking to work his way around to Kyrpa's back. He needs to be careful though, as he's in danger of losing this dominant position.

Nystroem has hold of Kyrpa's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Kyrpa manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Nystroem is working for a guillotine from mount but Kyrpa frees his head quite easily.

Nystroem tries to control but Kyrpa wriggling away.
Nystroem will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

Nystroem is going olschool here, as he tries to force Kyrpa to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Kyrpa shrugs it off.

Nystroem looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Kyrpa sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Joakim Nystroem dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


No joy there for Kyrpa, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Nystroem jabbing away but nothing is landing.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Kyrpa misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

Kyrpa closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Kyrpa lands in his opponent's guard.

Nystroem has his foot on Kyrpa's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Kyrpa works his way back into a safe position though.

Nystroem is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Kyrpa's shoulder. That is not cool.
Kyrpa can't do much from the bottom here.
Kyrpa is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Nystroem is controlling him well.

Nystroem tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Kyrpa is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Nystroem asserts his dominance and retains side control.
Kyrpa seems a little lost for a moment, as Nystroem dominates the positioning.

Nystroem is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Kyrpa knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Kyrpa is not content to let Nystroem control the position.

Kyrpa is pushing Nystroem's head away, looking to escape. Nystroem manages to hold on to the position though.
Nystroem working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Nystroem wants to control but Kyrpa is keeping him busy.

Nystroem thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Nystroem is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Kyrpa is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Nystroem is trying to get an arm triangle but Kyrpa is defending well.
Kyrpa is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Nystroem is controlling him well.
Kyrpa gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!

Nystroem won't let Kyrpa get back to his feet... He wants to keep the fight where it is for now.
Nystroem takes his opponent's back. Perhaps a chance to lock up a rear naked choke here.

Nystroem has the hooks in and he's looking for a rear naked choke here. Kyrpa is defending well but eventually Nystroem manages to get an arm under the chin and he's locked on the RNC! Kyrpa has no choice but to tap now! He does! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:04 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (RNC). Joakim Nystroem!
