PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Riku Momomoto (ranked 143 p4p, 1482 weight class) and Michiel Kortenhorst (ranked 20 p4p, 184 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Riku Momomoto!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Michiel Kortenhorst!
The judges for this bout are Eddie Farnsworth, Russell Pearce and Dean Styles.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Momomoto throws an overhand right that lands on Kortenhorst's shoulder, as Kortenhorst tries to avoid the shot.
Nice shot lands for Momomoto.

It looks like Michiel Kortenhorst has been cut.
Momomoto scores with a decent looking hook.
Momomoto misses with a hook. Kortenhorst ducked under it nicely.
Kortenhorst takes one to the side of the head.
Momomoto scores with a jab. Kortenhorst acknowledges it with a nod of the head.

Momomoto gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Kortenhorst to score an easy takedown into full guard.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
Kortenhorst trying to control but Momomoto is working from the bottom.
Kortenhorst stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Momomoto swivels though and keeps the full guard.

Kortenhorst drops back, looking for a kneebar! Momomoto looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Momomoto looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Momomoto!

Kortenhorst can't do much from the bottom here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kortenhorst is trying to improve his position.

Kortenhorst wants to lay and pray for a moment but Momomoto keeps working.
Momomoto looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.
Kortenhorst wants to pass the guard but Momomoto is defending well.

Momomoto is looking to improve his position.

Kortenhorst seems to be working for a kimura but Momomoto defends the submission attempt.

Kortenhorst tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Kortenhorst has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Kortenhorst is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Momomoto is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Kortenhorst tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Kortenhorst wants to take a breather but Momomoto manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Kortenhorst.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Kortenhorst drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Momomoto manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Kortenhorst has Momomoto in his guard.

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Kortenhorst wants to clinch
and Momomoto counters with a nice body shot.
Momomoto slaps away a takedown attempt from Kortenhorst, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Momomoto dips to his left and cracks Kortenhorst with an uppercut!

Kortenhorst has taken the fight to the clinch.
Momomoto working on landing some head shots here - that one got through nicely.
Momomoto is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Kortenhorst can do to turn this around?
Kortenhorst wants to take the fight to the mat but Momomoto manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.
Kortenhorst's head jolts backwards as he takes an uppercut right on the button!
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kortenhorst has Momomoto pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Momomoto manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.
Riku Momomoto has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Michiel Kortenhorst.

Kortenhorst jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Momomoto walks away with a smile on his face. Kortenhorst gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Momomoto lands a body shot.
Kortenhorst doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
Momomoto lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Kortenhorst at a distance.
Momomoto lands with a nice body punch.
Momomoto walks forward and throws a big overhand right! Kortenhorst drops to the floor like a sack of potatoes! Momomoto swarms on him with more punches until the referee wrestles him away from Kortenhorst's unconscious body! Wow, that was brutal!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:36 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Riku Momomoto!
Riku Momomoto retains his middleweight title!
After winning the bout, Riku Momomoto thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
