PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Tobias Berge (ranked 1150 p4p, 812 weight class) and Grigori Golov (ranked 159 p4p, 113 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Tobias Berge!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Grigori Golov!
The judges for this bout are Aafke Stam, Saam Ante and Wagner Zegers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Golov drops his hands and takes a jab to the jaw for his troubles.
Berge throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Golov throws a body shot but no joy.
We've been hearing reports that Berge has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
No joy there for Golov, who threw a few shots but didn't land.
Berge takes one to the side of the head.
Berge misses with a wild body shot.
Golov looks like he wants to counter punch here.
Golov lands with a cross.
Golov keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

and Golov counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.

Berge has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Golov can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Berge is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Golov's half guard.
Well, if Berge is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

This has been an exciting period of action!

Berge thuds a left hand into Golov's body.

Berge shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Golov sprawls well. Golov wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Berge gets slowly back to his feet.
And an attempted straight right on the counter from Golov! But no joy.
Berge misses with a straight right.
Berge ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Golov moves away.

Berge swung with a counter right hand that didn't connect.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

and Golov counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.
Berge throws the left hand but Golov avoids the punch easily.

Berge is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Golov can do to turn this around?

Berge pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.

Golov stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Berge swivels though and keeps the full guard.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Golov working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Grigori Golov showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Berge closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Berge lands in his opponent's guard.

Grigori Golov comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Golov has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
