PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Terrance Harris (ranked 1810 p4p, 1621 weight class) and Everett Covington (ranked 250 p4p, 227 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Everett Covington!
The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Cecil Peabody and Wesley Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Harris throws a body punch but Covington moves out of range.

Covington is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Harris gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Harris tries to circle away but Covington has him pinned against the cage.

Covington tries to throw a body punch but Harris avoids it by throwing Covington back against the cage.
Covington makes some space for himself and lands an uppercut.

Covington has Harris pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Covington pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Harris tumbling to the mat - Covington dives into Harris's guard.

Covington has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Covington is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Harris is trying to stick to Covington's back but Covington is turning into Harris. He's managed to reverse the position - now he's in Harris's guard. Polite applause from the crowd in appreciation of some nice Jiu Jitsu by Covington.

Harris is not content to let Covington control the position.
Everett Covington has got the better of the ground game so far.

Covington is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Covington working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Covington looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Harris with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position.
Harris is trying to control but can't.
Covington is trying to control the action in half guard but Harris is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.
Harris has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Covington is working away from the top position though.

Covington has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Harris defend it? Covington steps over the head and cranks it - Harris is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Covington!
