And in the blue corner, fighting out of New York, with a TWGC record of 46 wins and 19 losses; Nick Rodriquez! The judges for this bout are William Gold, Richard Clark and James Ackerman.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Lavicci shoots in but no luck this time. Rodriquez defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Lavicci. Rodriquez drives through with a takedown into guard. Score +2 for takedown into guard / half guard: Lavicci (0) vs (2) Rodriquez Rodriquez looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Rodriquez is fighting to break Lavicci's control of his arms but Lavicci is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Rodriquez wants to pass the guard but Lavicci is keeping the position. Lavicci can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Rodriquez controls the pace.
That's one minute gone in the round. Lavicci is adopting a defensive guard. Rodriquez sitting in guard here, content to control. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Lavicci trying to control the position here. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Rodriquez is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Lavicci wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now. Rodriquez stays in close to Lavicci's body and controls the position. Lavicci looking for a sweep. Not yet Lavicci, not yet.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Lavicci can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Rodriquez controls the pace. Lavicci is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage. Rodriquez won't allow Lavicci to sweep him here.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Rodriquez wants to pass the guard but Lavicci is keeping the position. Lavicci controls Rodriquez momentarily but Rodriquez frees himself. Lavicci being controlled here, momentarily. My spies in KFA inform me that Rodriquez has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Rodriquez seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. Lavicci pulls Rodriquez in to control the position.
That's nine minutes gone in the round. Rodriquez slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Let's hope that Rodriquez has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight. Rodriquez preventing the sweep.

That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Lavicci is looking for a sweep. Rodriquez is staying tight to Lavicci's torso, preventing him from escaping.
That's twelve minutes gone in the round. Lavicci tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Rodriquez wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Lavicci is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Rodriquez's leg. He's managed it. Nice work. Lavicci is controlling Rodriquez's position as best he can from this difficult position. Rodriquez seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. We're seeing a lot of stalling here from Rodriquez. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! The fighters are battling for position here. Lavicci manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
And that's the end of the fight! Rodriquez wins on points by 5 to 0. A relieved looking Nick Rodriquez thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it. |
