This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the super heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of New York, with a TWGC record of 52 wins and 34 losses; Jackson Ramirez! And in the blue corner, fighting out of Tokyo, with a TWGC record of 4 wins and 2 losses; BrĂ¡ulio Etxeberria! The judges for this bout are Chris Edwards, Richard Clark and James Ackerman.
The fighters connect hands in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Etxeberria clinches. Ramirez fails to pull guard.
Ramirez jumps into guard, dragging Etxeberria to the mat.
Ramirez is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Ramirez is working hard here to advance position. Ramirez has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Etxeberria showing good wrestling skills to control the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Ramirez pulls Etxeberria in close to his closed guard and prevents Etxeberria from doing any damage or advancing position. Etxeberria controls from within his opponent's guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Ramirez holds on and takes a little breather. Ramirez looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ramirez seems keen to control Etxeberria's posture. Etxeberria sitting in guard, not really doing much. Ramirez tries to land a sweep but no joy. Ramirez is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage. In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Etxeberria working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though. Ramirez being controlled here, momentarily.

That's six minutes gone in the round. Etxeberria tries to free his leg and advance position but Ramirez is retaining full guard. Ramirez seems keen to control Etxeberria's posture. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Ramirez is adopting a defensive guard. Ramirez looking to sweep here. No luck so far. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Etxeberria is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Etxeberria pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Ramirez is keeping the position for now.

Etxeberria perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. It looks like Etxeberria might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. Ramirez is looking for a sweep. Etxeberria is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Ramirez is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Etxeberria is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Etxeberria in particular looking to stall. Ramirez is looking for a sweep. Etxeberria is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Etxeberria takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position. Ramirez is controlling Etxeberria's trapped leg to prevent Etxeberria from advancing to side control. Etxeberria keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Ramirez is looking to control Etxeberria's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Ramirez avoid being mounted?
And that's the end of the fight! As we have tied on points and both fighters attempted the same number of subs, we will decide the bout based on the toss of a coin! Ramirez is heads and Etxeberria is tails. The coin is in the air and it lands... heads! Ramirez takes the fight on points by 1 to 0. Jackson Ramirez gave a mention to Threads of Fate in his post fight interview. That will please them (and hopefully generate some sales). |
