PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between John Barrel (ranked 3166 p4p, 4257 weight class) and Cyrus Choi (ranked 372 p4p, 459 weight class). Barrel comes to the cage accompanied by Big50. John Barrel had real problems making weight for this fight. After initially coming in at 266.1lbs, he had two hours to make the official fight weight. He made it but it will have taken a lot out of him to cut those extra few pounds. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, John Barrel!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Cyrus Choi!
The judges for this bout are Elvis Blanc, Ian Loll and Robert Douchet.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Choi stuffs the takedown.
Barrel blocks a leg kick.
Barrel tries to counter with a takedown but Choi is quick to defend against it.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Choi breaks from the clinch.
Choi thuds a left hand into Barrel's body.
Horrible takedown attempt by Barrel or perhaps it was just good defense by Choi, which made it look bad.
Barrel tries for a takedown but Choi sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Barrel. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Barrel is breathing heavily.

Choi gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Choi gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Choi is looking to take a break and control but Barrel is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Choi wants to stand up but Barrel is controlling the position.
Choi looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Choi is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Choi is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Barrel sees it coming and defends easily.
Choi tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Barrel.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Barrel keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Barrel fails to land the takedown.
Choi misses with a head kick.

Choi is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Barrel's half guard.
Choi is looking to take a break and control but Barrel is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Barrel controlling the position well.
Barrel won't allow Choi to pass to mount.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Choi wants to stand up but Barrel manages to regain full guard.
Barrel keeping moving, preventing Choi from controlling successfully.
Barrel is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.
Choi looking to sit in guard and control but Barrel gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.


Choi looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Barrel looks to be in better condition than last time we saw him fight. Obviously he's been working hard on his cardio.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Choi is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Barrel is aware though and is defending well.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Choi can do anything to dispel that myth.
Choi is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Barrel landing some decent shots from guard.

It looks like Cyrus Choi has been cut.
Choi really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Barrel. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Barrel gets to his feet and stands over Choi, holding his ankles. He dives in with a big left hand that connects! Choi felt that one! Barrel unloads more punches and elbows and this one is over! The ref has dived in to save Choi from any more punishment!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:41 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). John Barrel!
John Barrel tried to hype himself up post fight but didn't word it too well and it ended up with him sounding like a bit of a tool.
