PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Nick Mullen (ranked 2637 p4p, 3209 weight class) and Jambalaya Jones (ranked 317 p4p, 363 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Nick Mullen!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jambalaya Jones!
The judges for this bout are Dmitry Maklakov, Viktor Lagutenko and Igor Prikhodko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jones rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Mullen counters with a lovely straight right hand!

Mullen shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Jones tries to roll over but Mullen keeps him under control.
Mullen takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Mullen has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Mullen content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.
Mullen trying to mount his opponent but Jones defends it.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Mullen is looking to clinch.

Mullen wants to clinch up but Jones keeps it at a distance.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Mullen lands a jab.
Mullen takes one to the chin there.
Mullen throws an overhand right that lands on Jones's shoulder, as Jones tries to avoid the shot.
Jones takes a swing at Mullen's ribcage but misses.
Jones misses with a double jab.
Jones throws a leg kick

and Mullen counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Mullen's corner is telling him to maintain position.

Mullen slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
Mullen wants to pass the guard but Jones is keeping the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Mullen is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Our spies down at at Dangerous Fight Academy inform us that Jones has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off?
Jones is trying to control the position but Mullen postures up.
Mullen stands and throws Jones's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Mullen moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
You can see the frustration on Jones's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Jones keeps the fight standing with a nice sprawl.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Mullen doesn't manage to clinch there - Jones circles away.
Jones throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Jones throws a combination that misses

and Mullen counters with a nice double leg into guard.
Mullen passes Jones's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

Nick Mullen dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

A telegraphed takedown attempt from Mullen is defended easily by Jones.
Jones throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Jambalaya Jones is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Mullen on the wrong end of a nice hook.
Jones throws a hook but Mullen blocks it.
Jones misses with an uppercut.
Mullen feinted with a counter takedown.

Mullen fails to land the takedown.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

and Mullen counters with a stiff right hand.

Mullen wants to take advantage of his opponent's missed offense by moving into the clinch.
Jones misses with a wild body shot.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky.

and Mullen counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Mullen.

Mullen gets a warning from the ref for wasting time.
Jones tries to stall but Mullen uses the opportunity to gain a better position.

Mullen turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Jones tries to improve position but can't.
Mullen just content to control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Mullen seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Jones for as long as he can get away with.

Jones sneaks back into half guard.
Mullen trying to control the pace.
Mullen is thwarting Jones's attempts to control the position.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Mullen slips under a jab.

Jones tries to sprawl but Mullen drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Jones pushes Mullen off but Mullen dives into side control.
Jones is trying to get back to half guard.
Mullen content to control the pace. The referee will try and keep them active though.
What's Jones going to do here then? He's in a bit of a pickle.

Jones tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Mullen controls the position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Mullen's ground tactics aren't going to win him many fans. Let's hope he's got fireworks for us if he gets back to his feet because he's not doing much on the ground.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Jambalaya Jones will probably get the nod - 10:9.
That's time! Mullen's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Mullen thows a left - swing and a miss!
Jones is looking for the big counter here.
Jones with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling Mullen to score with a decent uppercut.
Mullen is using his height advantage well here, landing a good percentage of his punches.
Mullen tries to clinch but Jones moves away
and Jones counters with a straight punch to the midsection.
Mullen throws a hook to the side of Jones's head but Jones sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.
Mullen shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Jones as he avoids it easily.
Mullen has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.

It looks like Nick Mullen has been cut.
Mullen takes a shot to the body in his stride.
Mullen uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Jones.

Jones drops Mullen with a beautiful combination! Mullen stares up at his opponent, who ushers him back to his feet - Jones is looking for the KO!

Mullen is rocked!
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Jones drops Mullen with a huge uppercut! Mullen drops to the floor like a sack of potatoes. Jones is raining down punches and the ref stops the fight! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:44 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Jambalaya Jones!
