The official calls the fighters to the middle and the contest is under way. A momentary lapse in concentration from Ramirez enables McDonald to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Ramirez manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat. McDonald is the more experienced fighter here and he's going to need to draw on some of that experience if he's going to pull this one out the bag.

He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down McDonald for as long as he can get away with. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Ramirez is looking to pass McDonald's guard but actually McDonald recovers to full guard. McDonald wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Ramirez is now in half guard.

Ramirez is pressing down on McDonald's thigh, looking to free his foot. McDonald is holding on for now.
