PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between rafael soares (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ricardo da Silva Furtado (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, rafael soares!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Ricardo da Silva Furtado!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Cesar, Mauricio Rocha and Leandro Rodrigues.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
soares misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.

soares gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
soares is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Furtado is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
soares is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Furtado showing good wrestling skills to control the position.

Furtado avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Furtado controls from within his opponent's guard.
Furtado postures up.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Furtado is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Despite being in the dominant position, Ricardo da Silva Furtado just isn't active enough and the referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

soares feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Furtado is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage.

soares drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Furtado manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now soares has Furtado in his guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

soares is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Furtado with a poor takedown

and soares counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by soares.
Furtado can't get the takedown.
Furtado tries to pull guard but soares holds him up against the cage and eventually Furtado drops back down to his feet.
rafael soares has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ricardo da Silva Furtado.
soares wants to break the clinch but can't.

Furtado jumps guard and drags soares to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Furtado lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for soares!

Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Furtado is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.
soares is very frustrated here, being controlled quite effectively by Furtado.

soares is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Furtado is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

soares gets to his feet - Furtado follows without any prompting.

and Furtado counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for soares!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
soares is working to get back to half guard.
Furtado takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
soares wants to control but Furtado is having none of it.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close second round but Ricardo da Silva Furtado will probably get the nod - 10:9.

soares is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

soares escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Furtado gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Furtado postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head.

Furtado stands up and waves to soares to follow him.

soares looking for a takedown here - he's got it.
Furtado looking to sweep here. No luck so far.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Furtado holds on and takes a little breather.
Furtado wants to stand up but soares is controlling him.
soares trying to control but Furtado is working from the bottom.
Furtado seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Furtado is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst soares is controlling him.
Furtado pulls soares in to control the position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.

Ricardo da Silva Furtado comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Furtado winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
