PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kevon Artell (ranked 3247 p4p, 1482 weight class) and Cole Steel (ranked 387 p4p, 211 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Kevon Artell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 4 - 1, fighting out of London, Cole Steel!
The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Gregory Folan and Elvis Blanc.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Artell walks into a straight right hand from Steel.
Steel misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Artell scoring well with a low kick there.
Steel avoids a kick to the body.
Artell throws a body punch but Steel moves out of range.
Steel walks into a left hand.
Steel fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Artell looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath.
Artell throws a body punch but Steel moves out of range.
Artell lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.
Steel keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Artell misses with a wild body shot.
Steel clobbers Artell with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.
Nice shot lands for Steel.

Artell scores with a nice right hand.
Artell cracks Steel with a good jab.
Steel scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.
Steel wants to clinch but Artell slips to the side
enabling Artell to counter with a crisp jab.

Steel throws out a loose jab but Artell uses good head movement to avoid it.
Steel on the wrong end of a nice hook.
The fighters circling - Steel throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Artell lands with a kick to the ribs.
Artell turns his hip over beautifully as he lands a nice leg kick.
Steel tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Artell swivels and escapes.

Artell throws a shot from downtown. Steel moves away and avoids it.
Artell swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Artell takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Artell misses the jab.
Cole Steel seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Steel misses with an uppercut.
Artell will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
It seemed like Steel was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.

Steel moves forwards but Artell connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Artell misses with a hook.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Steel missing with a left hand there. Artell was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.

Steel throws a lazy right hand but Artell sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.
Artell is looking for a counter combo.
Artell uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Steel has time to react.
Steel shoots in and drives through. Artell sprawls well.

Steel gets the takedown into side control.
Artell tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Artell is working to avoid the ground and pound but Steel connects with a decent elbow.
Sloppy strikes there by Steel.
Artell is letting Steel control him for a moment.

Steel tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Artell is pushing Steel's head away, looking to escape. Steel manages to hold on to the position though.

Steel slows the pace down.
Steel trying to control the action but Artell is working from the bottom.
Steel tries to score with some ground and pound. Artell controls his posture well this time though and the shots don't do any damage.
Artell regains half guard, as Steel was trying to land strikes.
Steel wants to free his trapped foot but Artell is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Steel slips a nice elbow through Artell's hands, connecting with Artell's forehead.
Steel prevents Artell from standing back up.
The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Steel connects with a nice short shot to Artell's temple.

Artell is pressing down on Steel's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
Steel has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Steel postures up in Artell's guard and throws a big left but Artell blocks it.
Steel throws a big elbow that misses.
Steel trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Steel scores with a decent looking elbow strike.
Artell keeping moving, preventing Steel from controlling successfully.
Steel is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Steel trying to control but Artell is working from the bottom.

Steel postures up.
Artell is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Steel throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Artell works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Artell knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Steel on the ground.
Artell is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Steel pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Artell is keeping the position for now.
Steel lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Artell keeping full guard, as Steel tries to pass.
Artell is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Steel felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.
Steel slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Steel not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Artell wants to stand but Steel has a closed guard, so he can't escape.

Steel working for a triangle but Artell defends it easily.
Steel looking to control.

Steel has his foot on Artell's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Artell works his way back into a safe position though.

Steel is trying to keep Artell in close.

Steel is looking to cinch up a triangle. Artell throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Steel's body to avoid the submission. Steel has instead reached around Artell's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Steel arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 7:51 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Cole Steel!
During a confident post fight interview, Cole Steel thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
