PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between BJ Penny (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and John Harper (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). John Harper is the more experienced fighter, so let's see if that makes a difference tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penny throws a body punch but Harper moves out of range.
Penny fails with the takedown.
Penny fails to land the takedown.
Harper lands a powerful looking uppercut that connected with his opponent's jaw.
Nice uppercut there from Harper.
Harper lands a right hook to the body.
Harper thuds a left hand into Penny 's body.
Harper lands with a hook. Penny tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Harper, as that shot connected.
Penny avoids the body shot from Harper.
Harper connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.

Harper closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Penny to the mat! Penny manages to get full guard.

Harper pushes down on Penny 's leg and manages to get into half guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Harper is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Penny !

Harper jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Penny manages to avoid the submission attempt.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Harper decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Penny has his takedown stuffed

and Harper counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Penny 's guard now.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for BJ Penny . That's going to take a lot out of him.
Harper is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Harper tries to free his leg and advance position but Penny is retaining full guard.
Penny avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Penny wants to stand and escape but Harper is having none of it.
Penny is breathing heavily.
Penny keeping moving, preventing Harper from controlling successfully.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Donk. Harper catches Penny right on the button with a cross.

Harper closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Harper wants to lay and pray for a moment but Penny keeps working.
Penny wants to control but Harper postures up.
Penny tries to get back to half guard but can't.

Harper is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Penny has escaped the position, nice work there.

Harper is trying to ground and pound but Penny uses the momentary lack of control by Harper to regain half guard.
Penny is trying to control but can't.
Penny avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Harper.
Penny wants to get back to his feet.
Penny trying to hold on to Harper's head to control him but Harper postures up.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Harper postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Penny to stand up.

Penny gets a clinch.
Harper is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Penny gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.
Harper stops a takedown attempt from Penny .
Harper tries for a takedown but Penny manages to get underhooks.
Penny keeps control of Harper as he tries to wriggle out of the double underhooks.

Penny breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Harper throws a right hand that Penny ducks under and follows up with a left that Penny also avoids with ease.
Penny fails in his attempt to clinch.
Harper keeps the fight on the outside.
Harper misses with a wild body shot.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Harper darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Harper with the ground and pound but Penny uses the opportunity to regain guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

John Harper dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!

Harper gets the takedown into side control.
Penny is not content to let Harper control the position.
Penny tries to bench press Harper off him but Harper keeps the position.

Harper wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Penny , who protects the arm well.
Penny is trying to improve his position.

Harper is trying to get an arm triangle but Penny is defending well.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Penny can't do much from the bottom here.

Penny tries to buck Harper off but Harper is having none of it.

Harper has hold of Penny 's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Penny tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Harper cranks the arm and Penny screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Penny , who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.
