Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 1 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Mike Obrien! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Josh Sims! The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, David Schapiro and John Roberts.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Sims clinches up with Obrien and pushes him back against the cage. Sims has Obrien pressed against the cage, preventing Obrien from circling away and getting back to striking at range. Obrien tries to circle away but Sims has him pinned against the cage. Knees in the clinch landing for Sims.
Sims throws an elbow but it misses.
Obrien wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee. Obrien wants to get back to striking at distance but Sims won't allow it.
Obrien breaks the clinch.
Sims avoids the head kick by Obrien.
Sims stuffs the takedown. Sims displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Obrien. Sims closes this distance looking for a takedown but Obrien circles away. Sims is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Obrien tries to clinch but Sims moves away and Sims counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Sims. Sims is fighting off a takedown attempt but Obrien is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Sims to the mat. Sims regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat. Sims preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Sims is looking for a triangle but Obrien pushes his legs off easily.
That's one minute gone in the round. Obrien tries to free his leg and advance position but Sims is retaining full guard. Obrien wants to control from the top but Sims keeps moving. Sims controlling Obrien's posture. Obrien wants to get up but he can't break Sims's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Obrien has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Sims wants to sweep but no luck. Sims looks gassed! Sims keeping moving, preventing Obrien from controlling successfully.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Horrible takedown by Obrien or perhaps it was just good defense by Sims which made him look bad. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Mike Obrien. That's going to take a lot out of him.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Sims throws a series of punches but Obrien avoids them all with ease. Obrien with a poor takedown and Sims holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch. Obrien wants to break free but Sims has control.
Sims drops down looking for an ankle pick but Obrien pulls his leg out and moves away.
Obrien closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Obrien lands in his opponent's guard. Obrien trying to control the position from guard on top but Sims is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Obrien knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Sims on the ground. Obrien throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Sims works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Obrien with a flurry of punches that miss. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Sims is working an open guard so Obrien takes the opportunity to get back to his feet. Obrien has his takedown stuffed and Sims counters with an outside leg kick.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Obrien misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Sims fails with a takedown attempt. Obrien tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Sims avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Jab, cross, leg kick. Nice combination by Obrien!
Sims fails with the takedown and Obrien counters with a nice double leg into guard. Sims had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Obrien is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Sims Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Obrien's back instead.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Obrien showing good submission defense here.
Sims tries to get the hooks in deep but Obrien pushed the leg off. Obrien just looking to survive in the bad position. Sims working for the choke. A lull in the action here.
That's six minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Sims looking for the choke but no joy. Obrien is trying escape back to his feet. He turns into his opponent's guard and eventually finds his way back to his feet. Obrien with a poor takedown and Sims counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Obrien! Obrien is looking to improve his position but Sims isn't that keen on the idea.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. Sims wants to control the pace but Obrien is squirming around nicely. Sims goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Obrien is on top in guard.
Sims manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
Sims can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Obrien is looking to escape.
That's eight minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Sims has control of Obrien's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Obrien regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Sims looking to control but Obrien is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Obrien is desperately trying to improve his position but Sims has a good base and remains in mount.
That's nine minutes gone in the round. Sims goes for an armbar but Obrien turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Obrien. Sims has his foot on Obrien's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Obrien works his way back into a safe position though. Obrien gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent. Obrien shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Sims manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. Sims not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Sims can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Obrien controls the pace.
And that's the end of the fight! Mike Obrien showed his dominance in that final round. I think Obrien has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
