WP 63 PBP Commentary |
This TWGC bout is 1 fifteen minute round in the super heavyweight division. Introducing today's competitors. In the red corner, competing out of New York, with a TWGC record of 43 wins and 25 losses; Vasiliy Kulik! And in the blue corner, fighting out of New York, with a TWGC record of 35 wins and 46 losses; Strega Notturna! The judges for this bout are Daniel Bishop, Chris Edwards and Phil Schofield.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Kulik clinches up with Notturna and pushes him back against the ropes. Kulik is working for takedown but Notturna is calmly controlling the position for now. Notturna is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the ropes enables Kulik to keep the fight standing. Kulik jumps guard and drags Notturna to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back. Kulik has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage. Kulik keeping full guard, as Notturna tries to pass. Kulik is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage. Notturna trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Kulik seems keen to control Notturna's posture. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Notturna controls from within his opponent's guard. Kulik trying to control the position.
Kulik will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
That's one minute gone in the round. Notturna is stalling in the full guard. Notturna looking to sit in guard and control but Kulik gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. Kulik wants to control from the top but Notturna keeps moving.

Kulik is fighting to break Notturna's control of his arms but Notturna is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Kulik wants to pass the guard but Notturna is keeping the position. Notturna is pulling down on Kulik's head to control his posture. The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.

Notturna is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Kulik seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Notturna has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work. That's six minutes gone in the round. Notturna is looking to take a break and control but Kulik is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Notturna taking a breather here. Notturna laying and praying for a moment but Kulik takes advantage and regains half guard. Notturna perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
That's seven minutes gone in the round. Notturna wants to pass to mount but Kulik is defending the position. Notturna sitting and controlling from the half guard. It looks like Notturna might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. Kulik regains full guard. Nicely done. Kulik trying to control the position here. Notturna controls from within his opponent's guard.

That's nine minutes gone in the round. Kulik is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage. Kulik is trying to control the position but Notturna postures up. Kulik being controlled here, momentarily. Kulik manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Notturna manages to get himself to full guard.

That's ten minutes gone in the round. Kulik is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move. Notturna preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
That's eleven minutes gone in the round. Notturna tries to roll over but Kulik keeps him under control. Notturna is positioning himself well to prevent Kulik advancing to mount. Kulik is trying to control the action in half guard but Notturna is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

Notturna works his way to full guard. Good work. Notturna has control of Kulik's left arm, preventing Kulik from doing any damage. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Kulik works a leg free and moves into half guard. Kulik wants to pass to mount but Notturna is defending the position. Kulik sitting and controlling from the half guard.
That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Notturna is positioning himself well to prevent Kulik advancing to mount. Notturna wants to control but Kulik is keeping busy and won't allow it. Notturna is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. The referee calls for the fighters to work.
That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Kulik trying to control from half guard but Notturna is working away. Notturna won't allow Kulik to pass to mount. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Notturna is pressing down on Kulik's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.
And that's the end of the fight! As we have tied on points and both fighters attempted the same number of subs, we will decide the bout based on the toss of a coin!
