PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Rudy Beckwith (ranked 2647 p4p, 1271 weight class) and Whealer Van Hire (ranked 253 p4p, 139 weight class). Van Hire has chosen Till I Collapse as his entrance music, which hasn't gone down very well with the crowd. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Whealer Van Hire!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Bishop, Chris Edwards and Steven Brown.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Beckwith lands with a cross.

Beckwith shoots in and bounces Van Hire off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Beckwith trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.

Beckwith thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Beckwith tries to free his leg and advance position but Van Hire is retaining full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Beckwith sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Van Hire's guard.

Beckwith is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Van Hire sees it coming and defends easily.
Beckwith is looking to advance position but Van Hire won't allow it.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Beckwith is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Van Hire doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Beckwith.

Beckwith is working for an americana but Van Hire has been sneaky and has managed to get back to half guard, whilst Beckwith was thinking about the submission.

Van Hire is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Beckwith tries to score a power double leg takedown but Van Hire sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Beckwith somewhat.
Beckwith throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Van Hire stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Van Hire stuffs the takedown.
Van Hire appeared to try and counter that last move with a leg kick.
Beckwith is looking light on his feet compared to last time was saw him fight.
Beckwith scores with a jab to the jaw.
Van Hire looks to land a right hand but Beckwith moved out of range.
Van Hire tries to score with an inside leg kick but telegraphs it and Beckwith is able to avoid easily.
Beckwith digs a good body shot into Van Hire's ribs.
Beckwith has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Beckwith there as he acknowledges the shot.

Van Hire fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Beckwith manages to avoid it.
Van Hire throws a body shot but no joy.

Beckwith shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.

Van Hire pushes Beckwith off and gets back to his feet.

and Beckwith takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Rudy Beckwith seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Van Hire throws a shot from downtown. Beckwith moves away and avoids it.
Van Hire throws a quick inside leg kick.

Beckwith shoots in and gets a takedown into half guard. Beckwith showed some decent athleticism there.
Van Hire has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Beckwith is working away from the top position though.
Van Hire really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Beckwith. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Beckwith is going oldschool here, as he tries to force Van Hire to tap using a forearm choke. This isn't 1993 though, so Van Hire shrugs it off.

Beckwith looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Van Hire tries to lock up and control but Beckwith gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Beckwith swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Van Hire is now in Beckwith's guard. A big mistake from Beckwith there, giving up the dominant position!
Van Hire not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Beckwith keeping moving, preventing Van Hire from controlling successfully.

Van Hire avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Whealer Van Hire showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Beckwith tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Van Hire swivels and escapes.
Beckwith shoots for a double leg takedown but Van Hire sprawls well. He's pushed Beckwith's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Beckwith is looking to wear down Van Hire with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment.
Van Hire tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target.

Van Hire dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Beckwith. That did some damage!

and Van Hire connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Van Hire uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Beckwith.
Beckwith tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Van Hire was well out of range. Poor timing from Beckwith.

Beckwith shoots in but no luck this time.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Beckwith swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
It seemed like Van Hire was going to counter with the hook but didn't fully commit to it.
Van Hire has tried to improve his agility in the runup to this fight.

Beckwith tries for a takedown but Van Hire circles away easily
and Van Hire connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Van Hire is continuing to stall.
Van Hire bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Beckwith's guard.

Van Hire not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Beckwith looking for a sweep. Not yet Beckwith, not yet.
Beckwith is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Beckwith wants to pass to mount but Van Hire is defending the position.

Van Hire is trying to escape the mount.

Beckwith working for a submission here. He's tucked his head under his opponent's arm, looking for an arm triangle. He's hopped off into side control, looking to tighten the submission... is it going to work? He's given up a good position looking for it. Van Hire looks OK. Oh, I spoke too soon, he's out! That must have been tighter than I thought! Excellent work there by Beckwith! Submission of the night perhaps?
