PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Otto Cane (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tommy Gunn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Otto Cane!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Tommy Gunn!
The judges for this bout are Colin Fotheringham, Steven Brown and Donald Grub.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cane checks a low kick from Gunn.
Gunn tries to clinch up.
Cane fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Gunn looks to score with a jab to the body but Cane is just out of range.

Gunn scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Gunn with the ground and pound but Cane regains half guard under the barage of strikes.
Gunn is taking a breather. Cane says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.
Gunn thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Gunn trying to control the action but Cane is working from the bottom.

Gunn is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Cane looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Gunn throwing shots but Cane is blocking nicely.
Gunn seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Cane darts in trying to clinch

and Gunn counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Gunn goes for a takedown attempt but Cane pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Gunn misses with the combination.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Gunn fails with a takedown attempt.
Cane closes the distance looking to clinch

and Gunn counters with a shoot takedown. Cane fights it but they end up in guard.
Gunn tries to stand but Cane is controlling from the bottom.
Gunn looks gassed!
Cane tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Gunn trying to stand up but can't free himself from Cane's guard.
Cane manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Cane looking to control and managing it successfully.
Cane is looking to stand but Cane has his arms wrapped tightly around him, looking to prevent the damage.
Cane unloads with some shots from mount but Gunn bucks and avoids them well.
Cane throwing sloppy strikes here. Perhaps if he tightened up his striking from such a dominant position, he'd be able to finish easier.
Cane manages to capitalize on a mistake by Gunn to take his back!
Gunn is defending well here and trying to improve his position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Gunn wants to get back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Gunn staying busy and making it hard for Cane to control.
Gunn breaks Cane's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.
Cane is trying to control the position but Gunn postures up.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Cane tries to clinch up

and Gunn counters by moving into the clinch.
Cane is pushing Gunn up against the cage, for a bit of lean and pray action. Action being used the in the loosest possible sense of the word.

Gunn manages to break the clinch.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tommy Gunn dominated that round.

and Gunn counters with a lovely shot to the body.
Cane avoids the head kick by Gunn.
Gunn uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Cane.
Gunn misses with the combination.
Cane wants to clinch

and Gunn counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Cane wants to get back to his feet.
Gunn trying to control the action but Cane is working from the bottom.
Cane moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
Gunn controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Gunn gets to his feet - Cane follows without any prompting.
No luck for Cane with that takedown attempt.
Cane fails with the takedown

and Gunn decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Cane's guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Otto Cane. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Gunn stands up from Cane's guard - Gunn perhaps looking for a knockout.
Gunn throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Cane's waist but Cane gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Gunn off to one side.
Cane shoots for a takedown but Gunn saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Cane gets caught flat footed, as Gunn shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Cane trying to keep a closed guard but Gunn is proving a slippery customer.
Gunn must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Gunn controlling from the top position.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Cane wants to control the position but Gunn says "no thanks buddy" and passes to half guard.
Cane is looking to get back to full guard here but Gunn has managed to pass to side control instead.

Gunn working for a submission but Cane is keeping him at bay.

Gunn looking to control but Cane is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Gunn controlling from mount.
Cane sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.
Cane manages to get to full guard.

Gunn stands up and waves to Cane to follow him.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Gunn fails with a takedown attempt.
Cane looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Cane throws a sloppy head kick and Gunn moves out of range easily.
Cane misses with a double jab.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Tommy Gunn showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!



Excellent takedown into side control there by Gunn.
Gunn in side control, throwing shots but Cane defends.
Gunn wants to control but Cane is keeping him busy.
Cane tries to improve position but can't.
Cane is trying to work for a sweep but Gunn has mounted him!
Cane is working to get back to half guard.
Gunn controlling from mount.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cane is trying to escape the mount.

Gunn looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
Cane keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Cane is not a happy chappy… he wants out of there.
Gunn landing strikes from the mount and Cane is in trouble!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Gunn wants to finish this one by submission but Cane is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Gunn.
Gunn takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Cane tries to hold on but Gunn pushes him away.
Gunn lands a heavy elbow.
Gunn can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Cane is looking to escape.
A nice elbow there by Gunn.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Gunn unloads with some shots from mount but Cane bucks and avoids them well.
Gunn looking to control and managing it successfully.
Tommy Gunn has got the better of the ground game so far.
Cane is squirming around, avoiding Gunn's attempts to control the action.
Gunn is landing with some decent strikes but Cane is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue.

Gunn is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Cane has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Cane!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
Gunn not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Gunn uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Cane shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Gunn moves into the clinch.
Gunn wants a takedown but no success here.

Gunn gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Gunn in particular looking to stall.
Gunn stops Cane from getting back to his feet.

And that's the end of the fight!
Tommy Gunn comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Gunn has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
