PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Ionut Sava (ranked 5777 p4p, 24966 weight class) and Travis Carter (ranked 0 p4p, 548 weight class). Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Ionut Sava!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Travis Carter!
The judges for this bout are Paul Tew, Sam Margolis and James Ackerman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
The fight stays on the outside here - Carter looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Carter fails with the takedown

and Sava counters by clinching up.
Carter fails to pull guard.

Sava pulls guard effortlessly.
Carter tries to free his leg and advance position but Sava is retaining full guard.

Sava wriggles free and stands up.

and Sava counters with a big head kick but Carter shrugs it off.
Ionut Sava has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Travis Carter.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

and Sava counters into the clinch. Nicely done.

Sava escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.

Carter misses with a combination

and Sava counters by moving into the clinch. Good anticipation by Sava.

Sava pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Sava avoids the body shot from Carter.
Sava drops down looking for a counter takedown but Carter sprawls and moves away.
Travis Carter seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Sava lands with a kick to the temple. Carter shrugs as if to say "is that all you've got?"

and Sava counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Carter tries to clinch up
and Sava counters with a head kick.
Carter walks forward, straight into a front kick from Sava.
Sava throws a body kick that sends a sickening thudding noise reverberating around the arena.

Carter tries to clinch up

and Sava counters with a shoot takedown. Carter fights it but they end up in guard.
Carter is looking to stand back up but Sava counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Carter.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Sava controlling the pace.
Carter tries to roll over but Sava keeps him under control.

Sava working the head and body with strikes.

Sava stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
A head kick from Sava lands but Carter takes it in his stride.
Carter tries to grapple but his opponent circles

and Sava counters with a nice double leg into side control. Carter won't be happy with that.
The ground and pound from Sava seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.

Carter trying his best to control but Sava has mounted him.
Carter really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Sava. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Sava lands a big shot there that rocks Carter but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Sava wants to finish this one by submission but Carter is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Sava.

The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare each other down, ready to get back to the action.

Carter throws a right hand that Sava ducks under and follows up with a left that Sava also avoids with ease.

and Sava moves into the clinch.

Sava lands a takedown into guard.
Sava works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Sava is taking a breather. Carter says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Sava decides he's had enough of the ground and stands up.
Carter fails with the takedown
and Sava counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

Carter takes a kick to the side of the head.
Sava with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.
Sava throws a head kick that Carter semi-blocks.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Sava working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Carter's head.

Sava engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Sava seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Carter for as long as he can get away with.
Carter is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Sava seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

Sava cracks Carter with a solid left hand.
Sava engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.

Carter has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Sava has passed into side control.
Sava will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Sava cracks Carter with a big right hand but Carter just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Sava lands a nice forearm strike.
Sava really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Sava stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Carter is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Carter misses with a takedown

and Sava counters with a takedown into side control.

Carter is trying to strike from the bottom but Sava has passed into full mount.

Carter is trying to control Sava's posture but Sava avoids it.
Carter is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Sava is one step ahead and moves to full mount!
Sava takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

Sava has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
Sava continues to stall.

Sava is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Carter can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.

Sava postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Carter looks a forlorn figure.
Carter tries to lock up and control but Sava gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Sava cracks Carter with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Carter is looking to improve his position but Sava isn't that keen on the idea.

Ionut Sava showed his dominance in that final round.
Well Sava has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
