PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Clinch King Smash Machine (ranked 1136 p4p, 2187 weight class) and Edd Norton (ranked 173 p4p, 299 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 24 - 23 - 0, fighting out of London, Clinch King Smash Machine!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 19 - 20 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Edd Norton!
The judges for this bout are Alyssa Summers, Lou da Vinci and Columbo Gatti.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smash Machine throws a head kick that misses
and Smash Machine takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles.
Smash Machine misses with a takedown attempt - Norton sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Norton feints a counter leg kick.

Smash Machine shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Norton manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Smash Machine won't allow Norton to sweep him here.
Smash Machine stays in close to Norton's body and controls the position.
Smash Machine stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Norton swivels though and keeps the full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Smash Machine's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Smash Machine is looking to work some ground and pound but Norton has wrist control.

Smash Machine is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Norton is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Norton has escaped and now he's on top!

Smash Machine looking for a sweep. Not yet Smash Machine, not yet.
Smash Machine bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Norton's guard.

Smash Machine trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Smash Machine won't allow Norton to get back to his feet.
Smash Machine is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

Smash Machine postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Norton is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Smash Machine, into his guard.

Smash Machine has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.

There's a bit of a scramble here and now Smash Machine is on top in guard.

Norton wants to stand but Smash Machine is controlling the position.
Smash Machine is stalling in the full guard.
Smash Machine postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Norton keeping moving, preventing Smash Machine from controlling successfully.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Smash Machine seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.
Norton keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Norton connects with a looping right hand.
Smash Machine ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Norton moves away.
Norton looks like he wants to counter punch here.
Smash Machine throws a right and a left that Norton avoids nicely.
A little jabbing left from Norton on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Norton throws a hook but Smash Machine avoids it easily.
Norton lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.

Smash Machine drives through and clinches with Norton against the cage.
Smash Machine throws a knee to the head but misses.
Smash Machine tries to score a body lock takedown but Norton shows good agility there to stay on his feet.
Norton gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Smash Machine.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Clinch King Smash Machine. That's going to take a lot out of him.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Smash Machine looks to throw an elbow but misses.
Norton takes a knee right on the jaw!
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Clinch King Smash Machine will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action!

Norton tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Smash Machine on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
Clinch King Smash Machine seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Smash Machine throws a series of punches but Norton moves out of range.

Smash Machine shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Norton is trying to defend but Smash Machine finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Norton has one foot on Smash Machine's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet.
Smash Machine throws a right and a left that both miss.
Sloppy strikes from Norton. Those never looked like landing.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

A momentary lapse in concentration from Norton enables Smash Machine to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Norton manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.

Norton is edging up against the cage. He's using the cage to get back to his feet. Nice work there - the fighters are clinched.

Norton misses with a punch on the inside.

Smash Machine jumps into guard, dragging Norton to the mat.

Norton got a little sloppy there for a moment and Smash Machine has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Norton has managed to get both his arms back between Smash Machine's legs - danger averted.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Smash Machine not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Norton engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Smash Machine is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Norton is aware though and is defending well.
Norton wants to control from the top but Smash Machine keeps moving.

Smash Machine has his foot on Norton's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Norton works his way back into a safe position though.
Norton controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Clinch King Smash Machine overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Smash Machine is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Norton defends well.

Some stalling of biblical proportions here from Norton.
Norton swings wildly with an uppercut but Smash Machine uses good head movement to avoid it.

Norton manages to get underhooks and slows down the pace for a moment.

Norton lands a hook that snaps the head of Smash Machine backwards.

Smash Machine pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Smash Machine jumps to the side looking to secure the arm triangle…. Ooooh, that looks tight… Norton is gargling but he's managed to escape! Nice work there by Norton and Smash Machine has given up the dominant position trying to land that submission.
Smash Machine wants to control but Norton is keeping him busy.
Norton is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Smash Machine is controlling him well.
Norton is not content to let Smash Machine control the position.
Smash Machine laying and praying for a moment but Norton takes advantage and regains half guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Norton is looking for a sweep. Smash Machine is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Norton moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Smash Machine is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
Smash Machine has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

Norton fails with an attempt to clinch.
Smash Machine pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Smash Machine connects with a looping right hand.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Smash Machine throws a hook but Norton avoids it easily.

Smash Machine shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Norton is trying to defend but Smash Machine finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Norton is trying to maintain the position but Smash Machine is very close to passing his half guard.

Smash Machine looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Smash Machine working to pass to mount. He's got his hand pressing down on Norton's thigh. Norton counters though and makes it back to full guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Clinch King Smash Machine showed his dominance in that final round.
I think Smash Machine has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
