PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between James Hackett (ranked 1773 p4p, 1887 weight class) and Jake Askren (ranked 128 p4p, 143 weight class). Hackett comes to the cage accompanied by Foe Tha Love of Money. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 27 - 18 - 1, fighting out of London, James Hackett!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 21 - 1, fighting out of London, Jake Askren!
The judges for this bout are Chris Dean, Ben Watson and Ron Honeybunn.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Askren uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Hackett.
Askren shoots in for a double leg but Hackett sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.

Askren moves into the clinch.
Hackett wants to stall.
Askren wants a takedown but no success here.
Hackett gets underhooks to prevent Askren's takedown attempt.
James Hackett has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jake Askren.
Askren goes for a takedown attempt but Hackett pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.
Askren connects with a nice looking jab.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Askren gets cracked there but stands up to it.
Askren throws a body punch but Hackett moves out of range.
Hackett tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Askren manages to circle out of the way.

Askren misses with a takedown attempt
and Hackett counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Askren tries to clinch up.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Hackett throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Askren.
Askren defending well as Hackett loads up on a big left hand.
Askren throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Hackett lifts his leg as if looking to counter with a high kick.
Hackett tried to score with a low kick but Askren checks it.
Hackett looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Askren shoots in for a double leg but Hackett sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Hackett was looking to counter that move with a punch but didn't quite pull the trigger.

Hackett drives through and clinches with Askren against the cage.
Hackett stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.
Askren avoiding damage as Hackett throws knees to the body.
Hackett unloads a knee to the mid-section. Askren lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.
Hackett swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Hackett throws a hook to the body. More of an arm punch but it's all scoring with the judges.
Askren is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Hackett pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Hackett is stalling here. The referee will be looking to step in if he doesn't pick up the pace.
Askren taking a breather.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Askren has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Hackett after a bit of a struggle.

Come on Hackett - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.

Askren is trying to trip Hackett. He has hold of a leg but Hackett is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Askren persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Askren told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Askren slips nicely into half guard.
Askren is looking to take a break and control but Hackett is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Hackett is looking to control Askren's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Hackett avoid being mounted?
Askren wants to pass to mount but Hackett is defending the position.

Askren is looking to control the position but Hackett frees his trapped leg and locks up an armbar from the bottom! It looks tight! Askren grimaces and holds on for a second but is forced to tap or have his arm broken! Slick Jiu Jitsu from Hackett there - Askren really paying for some sloppy defensive work!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:55 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). James Hackett!
A very excited looking James Hackett made sure he remembered to thank all the fans both in the arena and on the internet. He said all the coolest people spend all day on MMA websites, which got a big reaction.
