PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sao Alela (ranked 1419 p4p, 1589 weight class) and Gabriel Soares (ranked 167 p4p, 180 weight class). Alela comes into the arena with Cryin' Like a Bitch blaring out of the sound system. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 35 - 28 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Sao Alela!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 12 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Gabriel Soares!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Blasius, Albert Achterberg and Paul Aken.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Alela swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
Soares wants to counter with a clinch but Alela pushes him away.
Alela moves out of range as Soares strikes.
Soares showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Alela.
Alela tries to score with a low kick but Soares moves his leg out of the way.
A punch lands to the side of Alela 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Alela throws a hook but Soares avoids it easily.
Alela has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Alela misses with a leg kick

and Soares moves into the clinch.
A short right from Alela on the inside.
Soares fails to pull the fight into his guard.
Alela working aggressively here.
Soares tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Alela smiles and moves away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Alela tries for a takedown but Soares sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily.
Soares ducks under a wild hook from Alela.
Soares defending well as Alela loads up on a big left hand.
Soares is trying to avoid his opponent's strikes and get into the clinch.
Alela uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Soares.
Alela tries to score a power double leg takedown but Soares sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Alela somewhat.

Soares stooping low to avoid any incoming strikes and then lunges in with an uppercut come cross that lands flush.
Soares stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Soares wants it to stay on the feet.
Soares wants to counter with a clinch but Alela pushes him away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Sao Alela. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Alela takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor.

Alela sets himself, and Soares steps forward looking for the clinch! Alela avoids it this time.
Alela throws a head kick but Soares moves out of range.
A punch lands to the side of Alela 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Soares lands with a shot to the body.
Soares moves out of range of the strikes.
Soares ducks under a wild hook from Alela.
Soares wants to counter the offense by Alela and move into the clinch position.
Some bone on bone action there as Soares checks a low kick. Luckily it wasn't a particularly hard one.
Soares lands a head shot.
Soares lands a jab to the head.
Alela thows a left - swing and a miss!

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Soares avoids a low kick by using good footwork.

Soares rushes Alela and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Soares has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Alela uses from the top position.
Alela working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Soares working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Alela doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Alela manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Soares trying to keep a closed guard but Alela is proving a slippery customer.

Soares can't keep his opponent in guard - Alela advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Soares looking for submissions off his back.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Alela lands a nice short elbow.
Alela tries to pass to full mount but Soares defends it.
Alela is trying to control. Soares wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Soares is looking for a sweep. Alela is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Alela trying to control the action but Soares is working from the bottom.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Soares is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Alela pulls his head out easily.
Alela trying to mount his opponent but Soares defends it.
Alela moves nicely into side control.

Alela thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Alela landing a few strikes.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Gabriel Soares will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Alela throws a push kick but Soares slaps the foot to one side.
Gabriel Soares seems to be getting the better of the standup.
A looping hook to the body misses from Alela. Soares does a little dance to reset his feet.
Soares thuds a left hand into Alela's body.
Soares moves away from the strike by Alela.
Alela throws a chopping leg kick but Soares manages to avoid taking any serious damage.
Alela sets himself, and Soares steps forward looking for the clinch! Alela avoids it this time.
Alela looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Soares fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Alela manages to avoid it.
The fighters circling - Alela throws out the jab but it was never going to land.
Soares avoids the body shot from Alela.
Soares looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Soares tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Alela paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Soares tests Alela's chin there with a solid looking shot.

Alela shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Soares manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.

Soares is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Alela defends well.

Alela trying to control the position from guard on top but Soares is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Alela wants to pass the guard but Soares is keeping the position.
Alela wants to control from the top but Soares keeps moving.
Alela lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Soares keeping moving, preventing Alela from controlling successfully.
Soares looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace.

Soares is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Alela is aware though and is defending well.

Soares has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Alela should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Soares has tightened it up now! Alela should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!
