PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Robert Kell (ranked 3925 p4p, 4990 weight class) and Dana Redd (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Robert Kell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Dana Redd!
The judges for this bout are Jonathan Paton, Joseph Jones and Chad Campbell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Redd throws a hook but Kell blocks it.

Redd throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Kell tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Redd is in Kell's guard.
Redd is standing up over Kell. Kell looks to escape but Redd dives into side control.
Redd is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Redd working away.
Kell might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Kell is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
Redd wants to lay and pray for a moment but Kell keeps working.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Kell is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Redd off and has taken his back!
Kell has the hooks in. Redd is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Kell is landing with strikes. Redd can't take much more of this.
Kell struggling to keep hold of the position.
Redd manages to reverse the position and now he's in Kell's guard. Nice work there by Redd.
Redd trying to control but Kell is working from the bottom.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now Kell is on top in guard.


Redd throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Redd wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Kell is now in half guard.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Redd is pressing down on Kell's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it.

Kell stands up from guard. Let's bang!

Kell closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Kell lands in his opponent's guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Kell is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Kell postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Redd is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Kell, into his guard.


That's three minutes gone in the round.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Kell is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Redd is controlling him.
Kell avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
Kell lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.


Kell gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
A nice inside leg kick there by Kell. That's going to slow Redd down.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Redd is defended easily by Kell.
Kell misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

Kell closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Redd's guard.

Redd has butterfly guard. He's looking to stand up here. He pushes Kell off him and springs to his feet nicely. The crowd applauds.
Kell is breathing heavily.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Redd takes the fight into the clinch.
Redd working hard to break the clinch.
Kell's corner are urging him to control the action in the clinch for a moment, rather than mount any serious offense. I'm sure the crowd appreciate those instructions... not.
Redd tries to break the clinch but Kell is controlling the position.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Robert Kell will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Redd stuffs the takedown attempt from Kell. Kell gets slowly back to his feet.

A momentary lapse in concentration from Redd enables Kell to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Redd manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Kell scoring with punches to the head and body.
Redd has his hands on Kell's head, controlling the position.
Redd not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Redd wants to sweep but no luck.

Redd has his foot on Kell's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Kell works his way back into a safe position though.
Kell slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Kell postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Redd is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Kell, into his guard.


Kell is working an open guard so Redd takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.
Some wild striking there from Kell.
Redd tries to counter by closing the distance.
The fight stays on the outside here - Redd looks like he's thinking about clinching though.

Kell tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Redd darts in trying to clinch
letting Kell counter with a right hand.
Redd shoots in for a takedown but Kell shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Redd throws a head kick but Kell moves out of range.
Kell was looking to counter that last move with a shot to the body but he didn't commit.

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Kell breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Kell throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Redd's waist but Redd gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Kell off to one side.
Redd counters with a body kick.

Redd tries to sprawl but Kell drives through with a takedown into half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Kell wants to lay and pray for a moment but Redd keeps working.

Kell seems to be looking for submissions.

Redd manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Kell keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.

Redd breaks the clinch.
Kell throws a sloppy head kick
and Redd connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Nice takedown defense from Kell. No joy for Redd on that attempt.
Redd misses with a wild combination.
Kell misses with a body kick.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Danga de danga de dang - Kell scores with a four punch combination!
Kell leaves Redd with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Robert Kell has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dana Redd.
Kell shoots for a double leg takedown but Redd sprawls well. He's pushed Kell's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Redd.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Kell prevents Redd from improving position.
The referee asks Redd politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Redd prefers to stall for the moment though.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Robert Kell will probably get the nod.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!

Kell dives in and grabs Redd's left leg, looking for a takedown. Redd pushes down on Kell's head and hops out.
Redd fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Kell manages to avoid it.
Redd tries to score a power double leg takedown but Kell sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Redd somewhat.
Redd tries to clinch but Kell is having none of it.

Kell has taken the fight to the clinch.
Redd looking to stall.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Redd tries to circle away but Kell has him pinned against the cage.
Redd tries to break the clinch but Kell is controlling the position.
The referee is keeping an eye on Kell - much more stalling and he will separate the fighters.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Redd taking a breather.
Kell is clearly stalling here... Pick up the pace son.

Kell gets a trip takedown into half guard.
Redd has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Kell is working away from the top position though.
Kell is figuring out what he wants to do next.
Redd trying to hold on to Kell's head to control him but Kell postures up.

Kell seems to be working for a kimura but Redd defends the submission attempt.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Redd slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Redd lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.


Kell has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Redd can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Redd is stalling in the full guard.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Redd content to stall in guard here.
Redd keeps in close for a moment and lands a decent shot to the side of Kell's head.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Redd trying to control the position from guard on top but Kell is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Dana Redd has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Robert Kell is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Redd darts in looking for a takedown but Kell gets double underhooks and turns Redd into the cage.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Robert Kell.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Kell, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
