Tate is trying to trip Gardner. He has hold of a leg but Gardner is hopping around, keeping his balance for the moment. Tate persists though and gets the takedown into guard.
Gardner wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Tate manages to pass to side control.

Tate looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Tate really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Gardner. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Tate is just content to waste time from the top position. Gardner takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
