PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Minatay Mibangon (ranked 23845 p4p, 23797 weight class) and Wala Sapi (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of 30 - 48 - 9, fighting out of Las Vegas, Minatay Mibangon! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of 40 - 40 - 8, fighting out of Las Vegas, Wala Sapi! The judges for this bout are Cecil Peabody, Wesley Smith and Tiny Johnson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight. Sapi gets caught flat footed, as Mibangon shoots in with a quick takedown into guard. Mibangon is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Sapi not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Sapi has Mibangon pulled in close to control his posture. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mibangon controlling from the top position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sapi pulls Mibangon in close to prevent any damage.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Sapi is defended easily by Mibangon.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Mibangon drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Mibangon tries to free his leg and advance position but Sapi is retaining full guard. Mibangon controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Sapi tries to land a sweep but no joy. Mibangon not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up. Sapi not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Horrible takedown attempt by Mibangon or perhaps it was just good defense by Sapi, which made it look bad. Mibangon throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Sapi tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Mibangon is in Sapi's guard. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
Minatay Mibangon dominated that round. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Mibangon looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Sapi throws a big counter head kick but Mibangon avoids it with no problem. Sapi closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Mibangon's guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Sapi sitting in guard here, content to control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sapi stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mibangon swivels though and keeps the full guard. Mibangon controlling the position. Sapi is stalling in the full guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Sapi is fighting to break Mibangon's control of his arms but Mibangon is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. Sapi controlling from the top position.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Mibangon fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Sapi to the ground. Mibangon is now in Sapi's guard. Mibangon is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Sapi can do to turn this around?

That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Mibangon controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.
A close second round but Wala Sapi will probably get the nod - 10:9. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!
Sapi looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Sapi looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mibangon is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.
That's one minute gone in the round. The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Sapi's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Sapi is continuing to stall.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. Mibangon with a lazy takedown attempt and Sapi counters with a nice kick to the body. Sapi dives in for a single leg takedown but Mibangon sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage. Mibangon attempts a counter takedown but Sapi avoids it well and moves away. Sapi fails with a takedown attempt. Mibangon throws a big counter combination but Sapi scrambles out of danger and avoids any damage.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mibangon shoots for a takedown but Sapi saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. And Sapi responds with a good body kick, but Mibangon manages to step out the way in time. Sapi throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Mibangon was covering up waiting for the punch and Sapi finishes the takedown easily into guard. Mibangon trying to control the position here. Minatay Mibangon overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Sapi is stalling in the full guard. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Mibangon is pulling down on Sapi's head. It's preventing any offense from Sapi, at least for the moment.
And that's the end of the fight! Wala Sapi comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. I think Sapi has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
