PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Michael Ashman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Anacleto Diaz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Michael Ashman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Anacleto Diaz!
The judges for this bout are Damien Edna, Donatello Bradman and Summer Carpenter.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Ashman shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Diaz napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Diaz manages to get back to half guard.
Diaz is trying to control but Ashman manages to pass to mount!

Diaz tries to hold on but Ashman pushes him away.
Diaz is bucking up trying to escape but Ashman cracks him with another couple of good strikes.


It looks like Anacleto Diaz has been cut.
Diaz gets back to half guard.
Diaz avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Ashman.
Diaz won't allow Ashman to pass to mount.
Ashman performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Diaz is trying to maintain the position but Ashman is very close to passing his half guard.
Ashman could do with loosing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Ashman prevents Diaz from improving his position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Diaz misses with a takedown attempt
and Ashman counters with a big head kick but Diaz shrugs it off.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Ashman wants to control but Diaz is keeping him busy.
Ashman is really struggling to control Diaz but he's trying to hold on to the position.

Diaz is trying to control but Ashman manages to pass to mount!

Ashman wants to control the pace but Diaz is squirming around nicely.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Diaz tries to reverse the position but Ashman maintains control.

Ashman stands up from the dominant position. He obviously fancies his chances standing.
Diaz takes a head kick and keeps coming.


That has opened up Anacleto Diaz's cut even more.

Ashman drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.

Diaz escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Ashman gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
Ashman controlling from the top position.

Diaz looking for a guillotine here but Ashman defends easily.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Diaz is trying to keep Ashman in close.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Diaz gets caught flat footed, as Ashman shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.

Diaz is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
Ashman has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Diaz had isolated an arm as going for an omaplata. Ashman is defending the submission well but is in a very vulnerable position. Diaz Is leaning forward trying to finish the omaplata but decides to abandon it, and take Ashman's back instead.
Diaz has the hooks in. Ashman is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Ashman tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!
Ashman wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Diaz.
Ashman wants to hold on but Diaz pushes him away.

Diaz swings around for an armbar and he's got it! Wow, that came out of nowhere! What a finish!
