PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Joao Alves (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Murilo Rua (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Alves kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Carl Orff - Carmina Burana - André Rieu's version. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Joao Alves!
And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Murilo Rua!
The judges for this bout are Thiago Cunha, Emerson Jorge and Daniel Cesar.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Rua misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

Alves gets a clinch.
Rua lands an elbow just above Alves 's eye.


It looks like Joao Alves has been cut.
Rua goes for a takedown in the clinch but Alves prevents it.

Alves pulls Rua into guard.
Rua throws and elbow that misses. Alves uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Rua's guard. Nice move by Alves!
Alves stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Rua swivels though and keeps the full guard.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Alves accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Rua doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
Alves trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.

Alves drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Alves jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Alves thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Alves closes the distance and pushes Rua back into the cage.
Rua creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.

Alves has double underhooks and is working for a body lock takedown. He's got it. The fighters land in half guard but Rua regains guard immediately.
Rua keeping moving, preventing Alves from controlling successfully.
Alves content to stall in guard here.
Rua tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Alves throws a big right hand that misses.
Rua throwing some rather feeble looking strikes off his back.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Rua looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Alves stopping the sweep attempt from Rua.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Rua closes the distance and clinches up with Alves, looking for a takedown. Rua pushes Alves against the cage but Alves circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Joao Alves has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Murilo Rua.
Rua fails with the takedown.
Rua thuds a mid kick into his opponent's body. That will wear on Alves if he has to take too many more of those.
Rua looks for a takedown but Alves sprawls well.
Rua looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Alves is fending him off so far but Rua persists. Nope, Alves circles away and we're back to standing.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Alves closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Alves wants to take a breather but Rua is having none of it.

Alves is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Alves passes to full mount!
Rua is looking to get to half guard.
Rua tries to hold on but Alves pushes him away.
Alves tries to control but Rua wriggling away.
Alves working the ground and pound effectively.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Rua is writhing around trying to get back to his feet.
Rua is bucking up trying to escape but Alves cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
Alves has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Alves looking to secure an arm triangle but Rua defends it well.
Alves sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Rua keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Alves blocks Rua's feeble attempts to strike from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Joao Alves dominated that round.
The cut man is working on Joao Alves's cut.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Rua has his takedown stuffed

and Alves counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Alves.
Alves trying to control but Rua is working from the bottom.
Alves tries to free his leg and advance position but Rua is retaining full guard.
Rua manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Alves manages to get himself to full guard.
Rua throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.

Alves has managed to work for a loose triangle. I think Rua should be able to defend this one pretty easily though. Oh, Alves has tightened it up now! Rua should have reacted faster there - he's in big trouble and yes, he's tapped out! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:57 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Joao Alves!
