And in the blue corner, fighting out of Tokyo, with a TWGC record of 26 wins and 16 losses; Leonardinho Chai! The judges for this bout are Edson Gomes, Luis Engracia and Paulo Santos.
The fighters bow as they face eachother in the middle of the mat and we are under way. Chai has taken the fight to the clinch.
Chai pulls Diesel into guard.
Chai can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Diesel controls the pace. Chai lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard. Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Diesel (0) vs (2) Chai We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Chai slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. That's one minute gone in the round. Chai tries to move to mount but Diesel blocks the move with his legs. Chai is trying to move to mount but Diesel reverses beautifully and ends up in Chai's guard. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Diesel controls the pace of the fight for a moment. Diesel will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Diesel seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Chai for as long as he can get away with. Diesel passes into half guard. Chai felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it. Chai tries to roll over but Diesel keeps him under control. Diesel wants to take a breather but Chai is having none of it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Diesel slows the pace down in half guard. Diesel is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount! Score +3 for passing guard: Diesel (5) vs (5) Chai Chai is in all sorts of trouble here.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Diesel controlling from the full mount. Diesel continues to stall. Chai is trying to reverse the position but instead Diesel has taken his back - oops! Score +3 for taking back: Diesel (8) vs (5) Chai Diesel biding his time, looking for the opening.
Chai tries to escape but Diesel has the hooks in and won't let him break free. The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
That's five minutes gone in the round. Diesel wants to control but Chai manages to buck him off and is now in Diesel's guard! Nice work there by Chai! Score +2 for sweep to guard / half guard: Diesel (8) vs (7) Chai Diesel manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Chai manages to get himself to full guard.

That's ten minutes gone in the round. Diesel biding his time, controlling Chai. Diesel has the hooks in. Chai is trying to push off one leg but he has to do so cautiously to avoid being submitted. Diesel seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission. Chai is keeping busy.

That's thirteen minutes gone in the round. Chai passes Diesel's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Chai is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Diesel has managed to free his arm - good work. Diesel makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Diesel. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
That's fourteen minutes gone in the round. Diesel controls Chai momentarily but Chai frees himself. Diesel has control of Chai's left arm, preventing Chai from doing any damage. Chai wants to pass the guard but Diesel is keeping the position. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Chai is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
And that's the end of the fight! Diesel takes the fight on points by 20 to 11. A relieved looking Kurt Diesel thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it. |
