PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jonathas Araujo (ranked 1985 p4p, 2363 weight class) and Daniel Burton (ranked 148 p4p, 171 weight class). Daniel Burton told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Daniel Burton!
The judges for this bout are Paulo Santos, Mauricio Rocha and Edson Gomes.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Burton misses with a double jab

and Araujo counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Araujo is looking to take this one to the mat.

Araujo blocks an uppercut.
Burton gets underhooks to prevent Araujo's takedown attempt.
Burton misses with a hook from the clinch.
Burton looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Araujo has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Araujo tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
We've been hearing reports that Araujo has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Araujo darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Burton is trying to maintain the position but Araujo is very close to passing his half guard.
Araujo tries to pass to full mount but Burton defends it.

Araujo wants to work for an arm triangle but Burton is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Araujo is trying to control. Burton wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
Araujo is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Araujo is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Burton!
Araujo prevents Burton from getting the reversal.
Araujo looking to control but Burton is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Burton is wriggling around here but as he tries to escape, Araujo has taken his back.
You can see the frustration on Burton's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Araujo is looking for the choke from the back position but Burton is controlling his hands well.
Araujo gets his hands free as Burton looks to control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
The crowd hopeful of a finish here - Araujo's supporters are on their feet, screaming for him to go for the rear naked choke.

Burton connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Burton fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Araujo manages to avoid it.
Daniel Burton seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Araujo might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Burton working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Araujo doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Araujo manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Araujo thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Burton can't keep his opponent in guard - Araujo advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Araujo is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.
Araujo is stalling here. Burton is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Araujo seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Burton has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
Burton passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Araujo!

Araujo slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Burton wants to control but Araujo is keeping him busy.
Burton is just content to waste time from the top position. Araujo takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.

Araujo is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Burton is aware though and is defending well.
Araujo is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Araujo looking to control the pace of the fight rather than finish it.
Jonathas Araujo overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Araujo utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.
Araujo looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Burton jabs at Araujo's body.
Burton fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Araujo on the side of the head.
Araujo loads up on a big right hand but Burton slips the punch.
A little jabbing left from Burton on the counter but it doesn't find it's target.
Burton scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent.
Horrible takedown attempt by Araujo or perhaps it was just good defense by Burton, which made it look bad.

Araujo shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Burton napping and manages to drive through into side control!
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Burton tries to bench press Araujo off him but Araujo keeps the position.

Araujo has hold of Burton's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Burton tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Araujo cranks the arm and Burton screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Burton, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.
