PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Kill Switch (ranked 4681 p4p, 4658 weight class) and George Powell (ranked 453 p4p, 449 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Kill Switch!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, George Powell!
The judges for this bout are Ben Zyskovitsi, Matti Vanhoillinen and Johanna Lukiainen.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Powell decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Powell wants to take a breather but Switch is having none of it.
Switch trying to control from the bottom.
Switch is controlling Powell's position as best he can from this difficult position.
Powell is trying to control. Switch wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Powell trying to pass the guard but Switch defending well.
Powell not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.

Powell not landing any meaningful shots this time.

Powell is trying to work for a kimura but Switch is defending well.
Switch avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Powell.
Switch slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Powell trying to control the position from guard on top but Switch is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Powell tries to stand but Switch is controlling from the bottom.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up.

Powell fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Switch sprawls well initially but Powell persists and gets the takedown into half guard.

Powell wants to stand up but Switch has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Switch trying to control here but he's found himself mounted! Oh no!
Switch is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
Powell trying to control but Switch is having none of it.
Switch blocking the ground and pound.

Powell looking to secure an arm triangle but Switch defends it well.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Switch is working to get back to half guard.

Switch sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though.

Powell seems to be looking for submissions.
Powell seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Switch does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Switch tries to regain full guard. Instead though, Powell has advanced to mount. Uh oh.

Powell wants to control the pace but Switch is squirming around nicely.
Powell wants to take Switch's back but he can't do it this time.
Powell throwing shots from mount but they're not landing.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Powell looking to control but Switch is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Switch bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

George Powell dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Switch has his takedown stuffed
and Powell counters with a three punch combo that has Switch backing up. Switch nods at Powell to acknowledge the strikes.
Switch shoots in but doesn't get the takedown

and Powell counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
Switch is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Powell to keep the fight standing.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Kill Switch. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Powell escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Powell misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Powell fails to land with a series of punches.
Switch is looking for a counter combo.

Powell gets a takedown into half guard.
Switch tries to roll over but Powell keeps him under control.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Powell wants to free his trapped foot but Switch is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Switch is looking to control Powell's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Switch avoid being mounted?

Powell is looking for a kimura but Switch is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Powell to get the leverage.
Powell moves into full mount! Switch won't be happy about that!
Powell looking to finish with strikes here!
Powell throwing strikes here but Switch is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Powell misses with a head shot.
Switch can't escape the position.

Powell moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Switch has worked his arm free - good work by Switch!
George Powell has got the better of the ground game so far.
Powell working away.

Powell has had enough of the ground for now and decides to stand.
Switch dives in and grabs Powell's left leg, looking for a takedown. Powell pushes down on Switch's head and hops out.
Powell feints the counter takedown.

Powell closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Powell lands in his opponent's guard.
Switch not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Switch keeping moving, preventing Powell from controlling successfully.
Switch can't keep his opponent in guard - Powell advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Powell seems to have lost interest with the ground game and is thinking about standing back up.
Powell moves into full mount! Switch won't be happy about that!

Powell can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Switch is looking to escape.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Powell throws some wild stikes that Switch manages to avoid easily.
And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

George Powell showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Powell gets in close and instigates a clinch.
The two fighters are working to gain dominance in the clinch.

Powell gets control of Switch's arms and successfully pulls guard. Powell will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Powell tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Switch trying to control but Powell is working from the bottom.

Powell is trying to stand.
Switch blocks the strikes from Powell.
Powell tries to get to full guard but Switch has control of the leg.
Switch is stalling here. Powell is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Switch seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Powell has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.

Powell is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Switch is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.
Powell has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Switch is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Powell off and has taken his back!

Switch really has the hooks in deep now - there seems like no escape for Powell.
Powell wants to escape the position.
Powell wants to control his opponent's hands but Switch gets his hands free.
Powell can't escape the position.
Powell turns into Switch and is now in his guard.
Powell trying to control the position from guard on top but Switch is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

Powell drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Powell jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Powell controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Switch thows some rabbit punches from the bottom but they don't do any damage.
Powell pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Switch is keeping the position for now.
Switch wants to control but instead he gets his guard passed and Powell is now in half guard.
Switch wants to stand back up but Powell manages to pass into side control.
Switch can't do much from the bottom here.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Powell tries to stand but Switch is controlling his head.
Powell is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
Powell has knee on belly and moves into mount.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Powell takes his opponent's back. Perhaps a chance to lock up a rear naked choke here.

And that's the end of the fight!
George Powell comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Powell has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
