PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jacob Song (ranked 3278 p4p, 3468 weight class) and Renan Viana (ranked 229 p4p, 243 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Renan Viana was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 2 rounds, in the featherweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jacob Song!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Renan Viana!
The judges for this bout are Ren Mimura, Sosuke Kotani and Shigeki Fujiwara.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Viana closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Song's guard.

Song looking for submissions from the bottom but instead Viana passes into half guard.
Viana prevents Song from improving his position.
Song could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Song actively working from the bottom here.
Viana perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Viana is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Song defends it well.

Song might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Viana is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position.
Viana thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Song's head.
Song wants to improve his position but Viana is controlling well.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Song is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Viana pulls his head out easily.
Song wants to get back to full guard.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Viana is figuring out what he wants to do next.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Viana closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Song to the mat! Song manages to get full guard.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

Viana takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Song has a hand on Viana's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Viana takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!

I would not like to be Song right now.
Viana keeps control of the position as Song tries to break free.
So, who will make the next big move? In this position it could be crucial.

Viana looking to break Song's wrist control so he can sink in the choke. Song remaining controlled and patient though - he really has to keep calm otherwise Viana will wrap this one up with the rear naked choke!

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
Song is trying to break free.
Viana trying desperately to keep hold of the dominant position.
Viana is riding his opponent, not letting Song buck him off.
Song is defending well here and trying to improve his position.

That's seven minutes gone in the round.
Song is being controlled on the ground here - he must escape this position otherwise surely the end is near.
Viana's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Song breaks Viana's hooks off and manages to turn into his guard.

Song drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Viana manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Song has Viana in his guard.


Song isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Viana stacks Song on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Viana!

A lull in the action here as Viana stalls from top position.
Song is not content to let Viana control the position.

Viana wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Song, who protects the arm well.
Song is looking to regain half guard here but Viana keeps moving and retains side control.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

And that is the end of the round. The fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Viana looks for a takedown but Song sprawls well.
Viana defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Song.

Viana shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Song is trying to defend but Viana finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Let's hope that Viana has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Viana drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Viana has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Song working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Viana doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Song is tightening it up a little... Viana has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Viana reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Viana taps out! Nice BJJ there by Song!
